Dog alerts owner after sensing earthquake

Amazing CCTV footage has been released showing a dog warning its owner after seemingly sensing an imminent earthquake.
The footage has become a hit on Youtube with over 600,000 hits. Some believe it demonstrates a 'sixth sense' in dogs while others are more skeptical, suggesting that the tremors would have been strong enough for a human to feel prior to the main quake.

The animal sprung into action after picking up early tremors of the 6.5 magnitude quake which shook buildings in California last weekend. The dog, Sophie, had been lolling on the floor of the newsroom of the Times-Standard newspaper in the town of Eureka on Saturday afternoon when she detected the first vibrations.

Nothing amazing about this. Everyone knows that animals can sense changes in the weather. People can also do this if they would just pay attention to their senses and their intuion. first we would need the smell and hearing of an animal. cluey, what made you think it was an electrical storm coming? i'm more inclined to believe you guessed and just happened to be correct by mere coincidence. kinda reminds me of an interview i saw with a christian. the christian, before converting, said to himself (or god, so he believed) if i hold my hand out of the window (it was dry at the time) and it rains ... Amazing. And would a selfish cat ever do this? Don't think so

didn't the Japanese have shubunkin fish in a bowl and its said the fish would leap out of the water? minutes before a earthquake took place. funny enough if you pay attention nature can teach us a lot. i can predict if a winter is going to be mild or cold by noting how early or late my tortoise goes into hibernation. and as a point i've posted on here in October that my tortoise went into hibernation earlier than normal so expect a colder than normal winter and lo and behold spot on. edit for splelign

LOL that cat was getting the hell outta dodge, almost like he heard it coming rather than sensed it to me though but to the last post, yeah we can learn from the turtle but can we learn how to do that ourself....the answer is yea and its called dopler radar a lil more flashy but hey were human now we haven't quite gotten to the point where we can predict earthquakes but i'm sure were close

This is soooo true, in 1988 when we had our 7.2's every bird, dog and cat would go dead quiet, and just before they hit there was a screeching frenzy of warning calls, howling and neurotic behavior! Very scary.

Everywhere this video has been posted is the claim that the dog went to alert its owner about the quake which happened seconds later. There's no proof of that. The dog sensed what was coming (as most animals probably did) and ran out. Nothing more, nothing less. But as cluey said, animals aren't always the only ones who can sense something coming.

anyone notice the hundreds if not thousands of dogs that failed to anticipate the quake, could this have something to do with the fact there is zero scientific proof that animals can sense quakes (past some really old stuff with carp) its probably just an urban legend the dog may have noticed something wrong because of the early tremors but it likely wouldn't "know" a large quake was about to hit (like people said the first tremors could be felt by humans)

id like to point out that the dog in the video was laying on the floor just before the earthquake hit. the human next to him, on the other hand, was perched in a very comfy looking office chair. if there was a slight tremor before the major seismic waves arrived, which do you think would have been in a better position to feel it? also the dog had another advantage; while Fido was just chillin' on the floor, checkin' out whatever nothing was going on around him, the human counterpart was in front of a quite distracting computer monitor. whose attention do you think will be drawn first? as much ... Registered to mention... I saw this a day or two into Haiti quake on CNN! and this says N.C. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1242751/Evidence-dogs-sixth-sense-K9-bolts-earthquake-strikes-American-office-block.html and Ghost Ship, those are house plants 8/

The dog was lying on the floor/gorund so was in a better position to feel it. Plus it started moments after he ran. I would've been amazed had he been trying to get his owners attention for even say 30 secs before the quake hit. Animals are more in touch with the natural world than most of us are, and can sense things like earthquakes, but this was not the case this time.
