Robonaut 2 prepares to go in to space

NASA's Robonaut 2 will soon be the first human-like robot to go in to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery.
R2 is designed to be a robotic assistant, weighs 21 stone and is shaped like a human torso with a head and two muscular arms. Because of its human-like features it will be able to use the same tools as the astronauts and will even keep the world updated on its progress via its own Twitter account.
With his gold, metallic head and powerful white torso, he looks either like a creation from Star Wars or a member of an American Football team. But Robonaut 2, or R2 as he is known, is about to become the seventh crew member on board the next Discovery shuttle launch. NASA will send R2 to become a permanent resident of the International Space Station later this year where he will become the first humanoid robot in space.

I think the biggest tech advance will be to connect a human operator to the Robot for remote work. Not running with a key board, but accualy seeing and feeling with it's sensors. I can think of many uses for that type of machine. Some thing like the helmet tye in on the F-35 fighters.

is there a reason why this robot resembles the top half of a human? did it have to be this shape for the tasks it will be carrying out?

I just watched a program about future missions to colonize mars, and they had the robonaut on there, but their versions had wheels instead of legs. They showed how they could use virtual reality helmets to use humans to control them, and also said that they are made like humans to enable them to carry out tasks almost as well as humans.
