NASA's Robonaut 2 will soon be the first human-like robot to go in to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery.
R2 is designed to be a robotic assistant, weighs 21 stone and is shaped like a human torso with a head and two muscular arms. Because of its human-like features it will be able to use the same tools as the astronauts and will even keep the world updated on its progress via its own Twitter account.
With his gold, metallic head and powerful white torso, he looks either like a creation from Star Wars or a member of an American Football team. But Robonaut 2, or R2 as he is known, is about to become the seventh crew member on board the next Discovery shuttle launch. NASA will send R2 to become a permanent resident of the International Space Station later this year where he will become the first humanoid robot in space.
