Why do animals become cannibals ?

Cannibalism in the natural world would seem self-defeating however there can be a good reason for it.
Male wolf spiders for instance sometimes eat older females, it is believed that this is because the environment in which they live is so harsh that the spider has to decide whether they can afford to mate with the female or if simply eating her to help them stay alive would be a better option.
Food is the obvious answer, but there appear to be significant issues associated with eating your own kind. Eating your offspring is a bit pointless, if you’ve put in the energy to raise them in the first place.
