Why do animals become cannibals ?

Cannibalism in the natural world would seem self-defeating however there can be a good reason for it.
Male wolf spiders for instance sometimes eat older females, it is believed that this is because the environment in which they live is so harsh that the spider has to decide whether they can afford to mate with the female or if simply eating her to help them stay alive would be a better option.
Food is the obvious answer, but there appear to be significant issues associated with eating your own kind. Eating your offspring is a bit pointless, if you’ve put in the energy to raise them in the first place.

The only thing keeping most people from eating others is they're not sold in the stores yet! What about Russia, under the guise of other meat? Ever seen pork with a tattoo?

Cannibalism could occur for many reasons.. being stock at 11800 feet in the Andes without hope of being found can trigger it... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uruguayan_Air_Force_Flight_571 or in a blizzard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Packer

I agree that all things have causes, thats a truth. But what I mean is, in these sorts of cases, science hasn't factored in, as a cause, the force of dakness/evil - and by evil, I simply mean: an action that does not have a positive or beneficial or prosperous or harmonious outcome. It leads to more negativity; actually to suffering even great suffering. Thats what darkness/evil is. I wouldn't say 'evil' is relative, I'd say it's a tangible reality. Positive and negative, cause and effect. Its just there. Theres no need to look beyond it. So the force of evil, whether conscious or unconscious,... [More]

Evil is absolutely relative, we all have our own definitions for it and I don't even think it exists really. If it exists, there has to be a cause for it. An action HAS to have a perceptible benefit for it to be done. Or else it wouldn't be. That's how beavior works. No creature does anything unless it is under the impression that it has a positive effect. "Evil", if it exists, can't be a reason for behavior. If it exists, it is only applicable to conscious and sentient beings rather than low-functioning organisms like spiders. Where would one draw the line as for where creatures begin to have... [More]

So evil is not defined as a malicious nature but instead as any action that brings negative consequences? Say someone accidentally drops a gun and it shoots a man in the head. Is that evil?

hi, I recently read this wiki entry about humans in america getting stranded in the winter in a remote region, they ate some of their own party out of starvation. It's a very long article but well worth the read if your interested. It's a terribly sad story and I can't believe it's not been made into a film yet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donner_Party

I wonder if in a situation where you haft to eat someone to survive who and how would you choose ? Would it be the fat guy - the hot chick - the old lady - the pilot perhaps ? Would their attire make any difference ? (Business suit, Polo shirt, dress) Do you think their race would be a factor ? (The Mexican woman spicier than the German male for instance) Then cooked if possible or raw ? Me - pilot, polo, Mexican or Italian, Cooked...

So if I eat a lot of women, it would be easier for me to find a man. Must... Resist... Onslaught of questionable innuendo jokes!

True, we may all have our own definitions for 'evil' but those definitions can't change its nature. Just as we may all have our own definition for what constitutes a 'living thing' those definitions in no way have any effect on its existence. Look at it this way: The very word 'evil' conjures up all sorts of conditioned notions of what it is - religeon and I think Hollywood have had a big influence here - but maybe its best to look at it as a quality. But in my view, quality exists, just in the same way 'good' exist - as qualities. Now, a creature may be under the impression that it is doing s... [More]
