NASA finds possible water flowing on Mars

NASA have announced the discovery of evidence suggesting salt water flows on the surface of Mars.
The find is based on photographs from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter which show dark "tendrils" emerging from rocky outcrops and flowing hundreds of metres down slopes. Its the best ever evidence for the current presence of liquid water on Mars and is a prime target for future robotic missions to the planet in the search for alien life.
Striking new images from the mountains of Mars may be the best evidence yet of flowing, liquid water, an essential ingredient for life. The findings, reported on Thursday in the journal Science, come from a joint US-Swiss study.

This is total speculation of course, but if some of the theories I've read have any truth to them then the atmosphere of Mars along with much of it's oceans may be further out in space, Pluto. Wouldn't signs of life from Mars be there to find in the icy mixes if those theories are true, much like fossiles on Earth?

i suggested there was water on mars and by proxy the possibility of microscopic life back in an 8th grade science class i was 13 or 14 at the time so thats about 13 or 14 years ago i think i got an F even though i provided evidence of past water. if i remember correctly. I would pay that teacher a visit, seriously.

I wonder why the actual news article just says "NASA to Announce 'Significant' Mars Finding Thursday" and doesn't mention a single thing about water or salt water for that fact. Yet this page does.....jumping to conclusions much?

"If your looking for me, you better check under the sea! That is where you'll find meeee, under the seeeaaa lab, underneath the water, seeeaaa lab, at the bottom of the sea!" I miss that show...

Before 1965 when the first satellite took pictures of the planet which showed it to be a desert, it was accepted that the planet had plenty of water and even vegetation and possibly life. I am of the opinion that all the pictures given to the public by NSAS since 1965 are fakes and not of the planet. I came to this conclusion after reviewing L of scientific publcations going back to 1900 which reviewed the pictures of the planet. Did I find any 'smoking gun' to prove my case? There was a color picture of the planet which appeared in the Sept. 1955 edition of NATINAL GEOGRAPHIC. ILet me qoute t... [More]

Littlehawk, salt water would not be "all the more amazing," it would be "as expected." Considering the temperatures on Mars, saltwater (at very high salinity) would be the only water able to flow freely. Salt raises the freezing point of water. Fresh water flowing on Mars would be something "all the more amazing." Very bad form, old boy! If you're going to belittle someone by attempting to correct them publicly, you might at least get it right yourself. Salt LOWERS the freezing point of water, not raises it. Furthermore, whilst temperatures on Mars range down as low as -130C in the polar winte... [More]
