Now that the US elections are over attentions may soon be turning to a new manned mission to the moon.
According to space policy expert Professor John Logsdon, it is likely that plans for the next step in NASA's manned space programme were agreed upon before the election but delayed until it was known if Obama would be re-elected. The plans are believed to involve a return trip to the moon and a possible manned outpost there as a stepping stone for a mission to an asteroid in 2025. The ultimate goal would be to then send humans to Mars by the 2030's.

Recent NASA announcements also seem to confirm this timeline. "We just recently delivered a comprehensive report to Congress outlining our destinations which makes clear that SLS will go way beyond low-Earth orbit to explore the expansive space around the Earth-moon system, near-Earth asteroids, the moon, and ultimately, Mars," said NASA's deputy chief Lori Garver during a conference in September.[!gad]According to space policy expert Professor John Logsdon, it is likely that plans for the next step in NASA's manned space programme were agreed upon before the election but delayed until it was known if Obama would be re-elected. NASA is serious about sending astronauts back to the moon's neighborhood and will likely unveil its ambitious plans soon now that President Barack Obama has been re-elected, experts say.

YES! America goes back on the moon! We left our mark there over 40 years ago on 6 out of 7 manned missions (Apollo 13 was an emergency return without a landing)...exciting news report! I seriously doubt NASA is able to financially fund the next missions, unless this is more of an international effort including the Russians, ESA (Europeans), Japan and China to the framework. Maybe Canadians and Mexicans will get to participate this time as part of a North American unified space program. I hope privatization of space travel and exploration will make new missions possible without NASA going entir... [More]

While I feel we need to go back to the moon, we need to get out of debt first as a country. Now if the oil companies want to finance it then I'd say goffer it!

. note that in the OP link it says that the men who go on the mission will not actually go to the Moon's surface... they will be in a capsule... quote from the pic in the OP link... Bee There is no imminent impact. Rather than a warning about the end of days, it's more of a red flag that Bushman is a great man who has lost his marbles. How many astronomy groups do you think exist out there? How many agree with Bushman? Are you trying to tell me that everyone with actual evidence is incorrect, and Bushman'... [More]

Ok let's get back on topic... The one sensible and on topic thing that bee did say is that this is not a proposal to land men on the moon. There seems to be a lot of people here assuming that this is an Apollo style landing that is being proposed. It isn't. It is a proposal to have an Orion stationed in the L2 position beyond the moon. I'm guessing that most people didn't read the article that Saru linked to as no one seems to have noticed the really exciting part, the plan to have men sent to Mars by around 2030.

And tell us how the Orion`s are to re-enter the earth and land ? Being that we still need to return our brave men& women from space?
