NASA has warned of the dangers in believing that the world is going to end later this month.
For those who subscribe to the idea that the end of the Mayan calendar on December 21st signals a global apocalypse, the end of the world is now just three weeks away. To combat this, NASA has stepped up its campaign to promote the facts surrounding the date and to reassure people that nothing is going to happen. Many rumors including an asteroid impact, a collision with a rogue planet and a deadly blast of solar flare activity have been summarily dismissed and debunked.

The real danger then perhaps is not an actual catastrophe but the affect that such rumors have been having on those who believe them. "While this is a joke to some people and a mystery to others, there is a core of people who are truly concerned," said astrobiologist David Morrison. Some people, especially younger individuals, are terrified of what will happen this is an issue that needs to be addressed.[!gad]For those who subscribe to the idea that the end of the Mayan calendar on December 21st signals a global apocalypse, the end of the world is now just three weeks away. NASA scientists took time on Wednesday (Nov. 28) to soothe 2012 doomsday fears, warning against the dark side of Mayan apocalypse rumors — frightened children and suicidal teens who truly fear the world may come to an end Dec. 21.

The world will not end in your lifetime. What is the world....? Is it the world 'as we know it'? Or, is it the planet no longer able for life to exist? Or is it, the actual disintegration of the planet into billions of pieces? If we are talking about the world 'as we know it'...it could end later this evening...or tomorrow morning...because in reality, all it takes is one Nuclear Weapon dispersed in an act of war. Pretend momentarily that a Nuclear Weapon was activated over Nebraska. A large part of the United States would suddenly be in the dark ages...no electricity of any kind. No batteries... [More]

Anything 'can' happen, and to be prepared is one thing, even responsible. To 'expect' that it will happen, is paranoia. Edit: To relate a local experience. Remember Y2K? Twelve years ago a local guy built a backwoods bunker and moved his wife and young family onto it. He even convinced his younger brother and his smaller family into his plan. Previously he sold everything he owned and turned it into fuel, generators, guns, bullets, water purifiers etc. They burned all their i.d.'s, birth certificates, passports... everything. 6 months later, after the world didn't end, they came back to civili... Exactly, who knows? I was born a few months after the Cuban Missile Crisis. Not knowing your age, why do you believe 'it's inevitable'?

Exactly, who knows? I was born a few months after the Cuban Missile Crisis. Not knowing your age, why do you believe 'it's inevitable'? I was born on July 9th, 1957. Remember when we were little boys and we had these tops that you wound the string around? And if you threw it just right it would spin for about 20 seconds or so on the driveway...remember? Think about the top, when it started slowing down, it got wobbly, and then very wobbly and then....scccrriiichhh...it would tumble chaotically across the driveway and land in the dirt. The world is now in that wobble stage. It cannot ever build... [More]

Joc, now I appreciate where you, and me (August 18, 1963) are coming from now. I prefer to believe that we've learned since then. I see the world as less chaotic, not more so.

Let's recap history quickly just for grins...when we were growing up as kids we were all led to believe than Nuclear War was going to destroy the world. But it wasn't. That was a propaganda show. De'tante was in full force and only a few countries actually had nuclear capability. There were Nomadic Arabs all excited because drilling for oil in their desert was making them all filthy rich. There was ... [More]
