A fascinating species of spider in the Amazon rainforest is able to construct and animate its own decoys.
Spiders are well known for creating intricate and often beautiful webs with which to catch insects but one spider in the Peruvian Amazon has taken this one step further. Using leaves, debris and dead insects, the remarkable species builds fake decoy spiders and then makes them move by sitting on top and shaking the web. It is the first time such behavior has been observed in spiders.
"Considering that spiders can already make really impressive geometric designs with their webs, it’s no surprise that they can take that leap to make an impressive design with debris and other things," said biologist Phil Torres.
A spider that builds elaborate, fake spiders and hangs them in its web has been discovered in the Peruvian Amazon.
