India are set to become the next nation to send a spacecraft to the Red Planet in a daring new mission.
While India still has a long way to go to catch up with the US, Russia and it's neighbor China, the country is nonetheless investing large amounts in to forwarding its space program with both a mission to Mars and a navigational satellite expected before the end of the year. The $83 million Mars orbiter will launch in October and will arrive there nine months later.

India's space endeavors have been met with a significant degree of criticism however, with high levels of malnutrition, power shortages, sanitation issues and an economic slowdown some have argued that the country should be spending money on their problems here on Earth before investing it in endeavors elsewhere.
India will launch its first mission to Mars this year, President Pranab Mukherjee said on Thursday, as the emerging Asian nation looks to play catch up in the global space race alongside the United States, Russia and its giant neighbor China.

I have to wonder where some of the people who posted above have been the last fifty or so years. India is no longer a basket case. It has made major progress and its middle class now outnumbers that of the US. Yes it has poverty, all countries have poverty. Yes, all countries do. Sickening really. Here in England we still have adverts asking for aid to India, this is the reason why some of us are so against what we see here. There are many rich people in India, they do not care about the poor or starving but they are willing to take aid of other countries. The aid is for the starving, not for ... [More]

Yes, all countries do. Sickening really. there are many rich people in India, they do not care about the poor or starving Why should they? Unless it directly benefits one self and their fitness, there is no biological reason for them to do so.

Why should they? Unless it directly benefits one self and their fitness, there is no biological reason for them to do so. You are absolutely right, why should they? But if they do not want to help their own people its best not ask others for aid saying its going to help them.

There are many rich people in India, they do not care about the poor or starving but they are willing to take aid of other countries. The aid is for the starving, not for the rich to get richer! Its in the nature of the rich to get richer; that is often why they are rich. I live in a socialist country and believe me there are rich people here too, in spite of the fact that it isn't suppose to be able to happen with our partic... [More]

Its in the nature of the rich to get richer; that is often why they are rich. I live in a socialist country and believe me there are rich people here too, in spite of the fact that it isn't suppose to be able to happen with our particular economic system. In the end it is allowed because taking away their money actually does the nation harm and generally does little to help the poor and even makes them poorer. Things like a space program are generally undertaken by countries like India for very practical reasons -- to control their own communications, their own weather and other surveillance a... [More]

It has made major progress and its middle class now outnumbers that of the US. Yes it has poverty, all countries have poverty. First the U.S., gives money to almost every country on the planet. Second, generally speaking the poor in the U.S. are richer than the middle class of those countries. Third, India hs a much larger population than the USA.

funny all the people saying that its a waste of time and money. It definately is not. Space is where the future of humanity lies, wether you believe it or not, we will be colonizing other planets one day within the next few centuries (providing we dont wipe ourselves out). Obviously this will take time to happen, so therefore you need to act on this stuff early in preparation for the future. yes india has social problems, but so do the good ol' US of A. If you think the US is a perfect country then you are blind. They have poverty, crime and uneducated people there to. At least India are looki... [More]

There are many rich people in India, they do not care about the poor or starving but they are willing to take aid of other countries. Capatilism at its finest eh? Blame the west for trying to turn every country in a capatilistic nation that only cares about money. But be honest here, yes some of the rich are greedy and only bettering themselves, but that also happens even in the west countries. Both India and China have come a long way in the past few centuries and they will continue to grow. You can expect countries to go from extreme poverty to a becoming prosperous and free without some tim... [More]

I am in agreement that other countries do it, I also agree that the the wes... [More]

Kudos for India sending a probe to mars, that will boost India tech sector and creating more jobs not mentioning science. Far more useful than buying a cheese burger to the poor ;-)
