Bill Stephenson got the surprise of his life when he found someone's ashes buried beneath his lawn.
The 70-year-old, who had lived at his house in Co Durham for the last 46 years, discovered a casket in his back garden containing the ashes of someone who had died in 2008.

"It's frightened the life out of all of us - but how it's got buried in the garden nobody knows," he said. "Why would somebody bury their relatives remains in a stranger's garden ?"

The box, which was only found when a gardener accidentally tore up some of the top soil, was fitted with a plaque engraved with the words "Thomas Lawson Cox, died 15th June 2008."
"I have no knowledge of him whatsoever," said Stephenson. "We have been looking at the deeds of the houses on the street and there's nothing there."

It was later revealed that the fourth wife of Mr Cox, who may have had possession of his remains, had moved in to a house on the same street back in 2011 and had lived there for two years.

It isn't clear however if it was indeed her that buried the casket or why she would have chosen to do so in the garden of a complete stranger with no connection to her late husband.

Local authorities are now working on having the casket moved to a more appropriate resting place.

Well if his brother doesn't even know, then who the heck put it there? Weird. You start thinking all kinds of crazy things, like is he married? Did his wife have an affair with the guy? There has to be some reason his ashes are on that property.

However, it emerged yesterday that Angela Cox, 62, who was Mr Cox’s fourth wife, had moved to a house next door but one to Mr Stephenson in 2011, three years after her husband’s death. I guess she decided to clean house and decided the guys garden next door was as good a place as any. Not really a nice thing to do in the guy's garden. Better to get one of these and plant a tree. I think it is a fitting and honorable way to take care of the dead.

Maybe it's cursed!

Maybe Mrs Cox could not afford the funeral costs, but at the same time did not want him buried next to where she was living. But this is not full reporting. Is Mrs Cox still alive? this could make a difference to his story and questions.

It's a good thing the ashes were in a container. Otherwise, how do you tell the difference between ashes and regular garden dirt?

Thats crazy so somebody trespassed on his property, dug a grave, possibly held a funeral and buried a casket containing ashes on his property?

Human ashes are placed in small boxes or urns, not large caskets. It would be fairly easy to dig a small hole and bury someone's ashes. Ok, this fellow has lived there 46 years...who lived there before he did? It didn't say how old Mr Cox when he died. If Mr Cox was around 80 years old he may have live there in the past and desired to be buried at his former home. Just an idea.

Thats crazy so somebody trespassed on his property, dug a grave, possibly held a funeral and buried a casket containing ashes on his property? No. someone placed a small box in the ground of someone elses garden. They did not do this:....big difference:
