Zoo asks for help identifying mystery creature with 'wings and horns'

Muntjac deer
What type of creature is this ? Image Credit: Facebook / Bristol Zoo
The Bristol Zoo Project recently captured a trail camera image of a strange creature with some unusual features.
When an animal is so strange that even a zoo has trouble figuring out what it is, you know you are onto something unusual... unless, that is, it has been posted up as a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the Halloween season (which of these two possibilities is most likely, we'll leave up to you).

The photograph, which was posted up yesterday on the Facebook page of the Bristol Zoo Project, shows a peculiar mammal that seems to have horns on its head and a set of wings on its back.

"Have you seen the recent news about a mysterious winged and horned creature being spotted at Bristol Zoo Project ?" the team wrote.

"Our conservation team use camera traps to survey the ancient woodland on our site. Here you can see a familiar muntjac deer alongside a creature that has us just a little stumped..."
So what exactly could this animal be ?

In all likelihood, the 'wings' are actually a photographic anomaly, meaning that the mystery creature is also likely to be a muntjac deer - a common species found in the region.

Nonetheless, the image has certainly generated a lot of attention over the last few days.

@Buzz_Light_Year You're right. If you look closely at the wing to the left, it's the deers ear (same shape). Same goes for the horn, but closer to the ear, so it turned it's head a bit.

The deer moved it's head too quick or wiggled it's ears.

The tail comes out first. Then the claws and the antlers last because it's about puberty and they are only used for mating.

Nick Redfern: "This creature undeniably exists." Susan Slaughter: "The deer man is a form of energy."
