Five decades on from her disappearance, the mystery of what happened to Sheila Fox has finally been solved.
It's not often that someone who has been missing for half a century turns up safe and well, but this was the unexpected outcome of a renewed appeal recently issued by police in the West Midlands, England after a previously unseen photograph of her sparked hopes that she could be found.
Shiela Fox vanished without a trace at the age of 16 back in 1972 while she was living with her parents but was thought to have been in a relationship with an older man.
The search for her whereabouts would eventually come up empty, resulting in a cold case that would endure for over five decades.
It wasn't until a previously unseen photograph of her from around the time of her disappearance came to light that investigators decided to reopen the case and issue a fresh appeal.
Incredibly, within hours, a member of the public provided information that lead to her whereabouts.
"We're absolutely delighted to have found Sheila after more than five decades," said Detective Sergeant Jenna Shaw.
"We searched through every piece of evidence we could find and managed to locate a photo of Sheila."
"We are a small team of officers and I'd like to recognize the work of DC Shaun Reeve, who managed to resolve this case with help from the public."
"Every missing person has a story, and their families and friends deserve to know what happened to them and, hopefully, be reunited with them."
