Mysteries revisited: the Big Tujunga Canyon alien abductions

Big Tujunga Canyon. Image Credit: CC BY 3.0 MajaTrochimczyk When it comes to historic alien abduction cases, the Barney and Betty Hill encounter needs no introduction - yet there is another, even earlier case of alleged alien abduction that doesn't get mentioned anywhere nearly as much.

In the early hours of March 22, 1953, two women who had been staying in a remote cabin in California's Big Tujunga Canyon suddenly became aware of a blindingly bright light and an unearthly stillness that preceded an abduction experience that would haunt them for the rest of their lives.

During later hypnosis sessions, they recalled being 'floated' into a beam of light and then examined aboard a spacecraft by strange entities who used some sort of scanning device.

It later transpired that several other women in the area had also had similar experiences.

"It is absolutely a very early case in the pantheon of alien abductions," said podcaster Rob Kristoffersen.

"It's not a case that gets talked about a lot... But, I think it's one of the more important cases that should be looked at more."Perhaps the main reason that this particular case has flown under the radar is because the women had been hesitant to talk about their experiences and it wasn't until the 1970s that the original two abductees from 1953 actually spoke to researcher Ann Druffel (who later wrote a book about them).

There was also a certain stigma regarding the relationship between the women at the time.

"Of course they weren't going to talk about these things in the 1950s," said paranormal researcher Dr. C.S. Matthews. "They wouldn't dare... These women were brave in coming forward."

"They had to be because they could lose a lot."

Ultmately, the Big Tujunga Canyon abductions remain an intriguing and oft-overlooked chapter in the history of alien abduction experiences.

To date, no explanation for these encounters has ever been found.
