Meldrum was an expert on primate movements and foot morphology - skills that he applied to the Bigfoot mystery.
Born in 1958, Jeff Meldrum was a professor of Anatomy and Anthropology in the Department of Biological Sciences at Idaho State University and was perhaps best known for his many contributions to the Bigfoot phenomenon, about which he authored the book
Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science in 2006.
Unlike many Bigfoot researchers, he was able to use his knowledge of anthropology to offer an analytical approach to the study of alleged Bigfoot footprints and to determining how such a creature might move.
Throughout his life, he believed that Bigfoot is indeed a real creature and added an element of authenticity to the field thanks to his academic background.
"It is with profound sadness that the Meldrum family shares that Dr. Meldrum has passed following a battle with brain cancer," his widow wrote on Facebook on September 11th.
"The illness was brief and he passed with his family at his side. He loved teaching and researching Bigfoot. But he was a husband and father first."
"I am so grateful to have shared the last 17 years of my life with him. He was a force of nature."
"Please respect our privacy in our time of grief."
