A peculiar experiment once saw two performance artists tie themselves together with an 8ft length of rope.
Imagine being permanently attached to another person with a rope so that neither of you can be more than a few feet from the other, but at the same time, not being allowed to touch each other at all.
Back in the 1980s, this bizarre scenario became the focus of an experiment conducted by Tehching Hsieh and Linda Montano who decided to do exactly this for an entire 12 months.
Speaking recently about the experience, the pair - who are now in their 70s and 80s - maintained that privacy was the single biggest issue, along with trying to carry out normal, everyday tasks.
For example, if one of them needed to use the bathroom, the other would have to stop what they were doing and go along as well. The same was true for telephone calls, eating and hygiene needs.
In some cases, the stress of the situation would cause them to argue and fall out.
There were even occasions in which they would get so fed up of each other that they would repeatedly tug on each other's side of the rope until they stopped speaking to one another for extended periods.
"We were becoming more animal-like. Somewhat like monkeys," said Montano.
"We began pointing with sounds and groans and moans. We stopped talking almost completely."
The experiment might have seemed like a pointless exercise, but what it did do is highlight the aspects of our lives that necessitate privacy and individuality.
While some company is nice, being tethered to someone 24/7 soon becomes an issue.
It makes you appreciate what it must be like for conjoined twins who face being physically connected to each other for their entire lives.
