An unusual new species of fish has been discovered in the waters of a pitch-black cave beneath a US military base.
Deep down beneath the floor of the US Army's Redstone Arsenal near Huntsville, Alabama, there lies a peculiar species that had, until now, remained completely undiscovered.
Named
Demogorgonichthys arcanus (meaning "demon cavefish"), this strange creature has no eyes, no skin color and is found nowhere else on Earth but in this tiny pool beneath the base.
While its existence has been linked by conspiracy theorists to stories of reverse-engineered alien technology at the base, the truth is that this tiny fish has been there for millions of years.
According to researchers at the University of Alabama, what makes it particularly unusual is the fact that other fish at the same location seem to have gone down an entirely different evolutionary path.
The demon cavefish is so unique, in fact, that it has been placed in its own biological subgroup.
"Finding an entirely unknown, new genus of freshwater fish in eastern North America today is a little like finding a new kind of big cat," said biological scientist Dr Matthew Niemiller.
"The group is so well known, we thought the big surprises were behind us. To have one turn up in a cave we've watched for three decades is a real reminder to stay curious."
"It was genuinely surprising."
