China's answer to Area 51 is expanding at an accelerating pace

Image: AI-generated (Bing AI / Dall-E 3) In the United States, there is perhaps no military base as notorious and secretive as Area 51, a place long associated with the testing of black projects and with stories of reverse-engineered alien technology.

The US, however, is not the only country with a facility such as this.

In the remote Xinjiang autonomous region of northwestern China lies a similarly notorious base where experimental aircraft are tested and new military technologies are developed.

Situated near the Lop Nur Nuclear Test Base, this clandestine facility has also been undergoing significant expansion, turning it from a small military installation into a major airbase.

It is already home to one of the longest runways on Earth, which measures 16,400ft in length.In the past, the base had been used to test military space planes and other next-generation vehicles, so who knows what's actually going on there these days given that it is now several times the size.

Multiple new large hangars have been built as well as taxiways and other aircraft infrastructure.

Clearly, the Chinese military intends to house (and presumably test) numerous vehicles there, though exactly which ones and for what purpose remains unclear.

It has been speculated that the base will serve as home to stealth aircraft as well as sophisticated unmanned drones.

Whatever the case, the facility is more than earning is reputation as China's answer to Area 51.
