White Zebra

Uploader comment: A newly born white Zebra stands next to its mother at the Nairobi National Park April 7, 2004. Kenya Wildlife Service officials said on Thursday they were struggling to understand how a baby zebra in the game park was born without black and white stripes. The wildlife experts will carry out further studies to determine the reason it was born white.

How cute!

I'd say it's a Leucistic. Albinos have pink skin, and this little guy's ears are clearly black, as is his nose. It's not a mystery, just a recessive gene that pops up every now and then.

It looks like it went through the wash and lost all its stripes!! I'm sure they took it into captivity to save it.

I find this picture interesting, since science has finally piped in on the debate over what color a zebra's stripes really are. Most Westerners see a white animal with black stripes, whereas most Africans see a black animal with white stripes. Scientists studying the issue have always sided with the Africans.

Isn't it at a wildlife reserve though? So I dont think it'd get 'picked off'? It's cute though.

You can kinda see the strips they are a really light grey, almost white. It's probably albino, unless it manages to stay in the middle of the herd it will be picked off.

Dang, that scared me for a sec, as I was scrolling down, I feared it was just a picture of a zebras butt.

It's Albino, I live in South Africa and zebras are not born stripeless, they'd be seen too easily if they were.
Comment icon #6 Posted by azraelschroeder on 15 September, 2004, 4:37
looks albino to me.
Comment icon #5 Posted by last_one on 10 September, 2004, 16:34
it looks EVIL. and yep, with the stripes it wont blend in with the rest of the zebras and will be picked off.
Comment icon #4 Posted by bronwyn on 2 September, 2004, 21:31
Yes, it's an albino. Sadly, not much chance for survival I would think.
Comment icon #3 Posted by earth_dog on 25 August, 2004, 12:32
Do you think it might be an Albino?
Comment icon #2 Posted by ybc on 7 August, 2004, 13:12

I have seen stripless Zebras in South Africa! I was told that the Zebras are born with stripes but you can't see them until they have matured!!!
