Moore's beach monster (2)

Uploader comment: Found washed up on a beach in california. There was one artical in local paper with two pictures back in the 1920's. Described as having a large head with a 15 foot long neck. Dismissed as a "basking shark" so locals would not be scared. Said to be a pleusiasur or something like that. Found this picture online.

Image status: EXPLAINED A creature that washed up near Santa Cruz in 1925, it is believed to be a type of beaked whale.

And with the teeth they had, it's safe to assume they didn't live on "herbage."
Comment icon #32 Posted by darklady on 10 June, 2007, 15:39
Plesiosaurus had teeth.

Do a google search of Moore Beach Monster. What is interesting is one of the people to inspect the carcass in 1925 was E.L. Wallace, a man who served twice as president of the Natural History Society of British Columbia. He had the following to say about the animal: "My examination of the monster was quite thorough. I felt in its mouth and found it had no teeth. Its head is large and its neck fully twenty feet long. The body is weak and the tail is only three feet in length from the end of the backbone. These facts do away with the whale theory, as the backbone of a whale is far larger ...

Regardless of what it actually is, this is really cool in the sense of poth unexplained and ancient creatures.

I used to have a Time-Life book called "Mysterious Creatures" and this picture was in it. The caption said that scientists eventually determined that this carcass was "the remains of an extremely rare beaked whale from the North Pacific."

How come everytime something big & weird washes up on the beach, the first thing everybody says is : "It's a Dinosaur!!!". One would think that by now most coastal regions are used to this. I can just hear the people saying: "Oh Darn! Not ANOTHER dead 'dinosaur'!"

Looks like a dinasour to me. Why on earth shouldn't it be?? Someone tell that to those crazy csiantists who are ready to blame anything BUT a posible unkown specsies that they are too afraid to admit exists
Comment icon #24 Posted by aghimacrazyduckofdoom on 21 May, 2006, 18:54
The head is really big, and the neck is really small (so is the body)
Comment icon #23 Posted by dino_nut on 13 March, 2006, 17:33
Looks like an awfuly big head for a thought extinct for 65 million years plesiosaur. Gonna have to concur with the badly cecomposed whale theory on this one. Why do theese long dead reptiles wash up on beaches all the god damn time, but some how never get recorded in the paleontological record. *dripping with sarcasm

ummmm the necks in tact
Comment icon #21 Posted by gear on 6 November, 2005, 20:52
its a beaked whale with "dangly" bits of the remains of the body hanging on
Comment icon #20 Posted by fullmooneyes on 2 November, 2005, 2:35
The head might resemble a beaked whale but how can you explain the neck????? and I think everyone on this forum has probably seen a dead basking shark n it doesnt look like that. There is actually a second photo giving you a better look at the head.
Comment icon #19 Posted by crypto_chick on 30 October, 2005, 21:15
well what if its not a beaked whale but really some kind of prehistoric monster how could you tell unless they some how took dna samples i mean why does everything always end up as a beaked whale or a basking shark
Comment icon #18 Posted by ilovescience2234 on 30 October, 2005, 17:54
It could possible be a dinosaur, but it is more likely to be a whale.
Comment icon #17 Posted by bitterman on 6 October, 2005, 12:20
The head strongly resembles that of Baird's Beaked Whale im pretty sure thats what it is.

its not photo shop i saw this when i was a kid and im 23 i heard either its a basking shark or a deformed bottle nose dolphin thats what i heard but i think its somthing else
Comment icon #14 Posted by fullmooneyes on 6 September, 2005, 0:22
Beaked whales may have only been identified by carcasses but they have been seen in the wild since then, and the head bears little resemblance to this carcass.
Comment icon #13 Posted by avitus on 28 August, 2005, 2:53
That's Moore's Beach Monster, it was never assumed to be a basking shark. It was found in 1925 and had a 20 foot long neck. I must say that it is definately NOT a plesiosaur, as you can see in other pictures it has the unmistakable head of a beaked whale. I believe it is an unkown species of long necked beaked whale, or a mutation of a beaked whale. Remember that beaked whales are incredibly rare, and some species have never been seen alive, only studied from dead specimens that have washed ashore.

Actually some people think its a beaked whale, but i very much doubt it cos of the neck. In my oppinion it looks like a plesiosaur.

Yeah there are plenty of unidentifiable non photogenic creatures like this in the ocean, in fresh water, clogging shower drains. I know exactly what it is too, a picture without enough clues to Identify it as any name that I can't remember how to spell, even vaguely so that someone else could recognise it.
Comment icon #10 Posted by fullmooneyes on 23 June, 2005, 21:57
Looks like the head of something, doesn't look like an octopus to me.
Comment icon #9 Posted by jeenuh on 22 June, 2005, 23:06
Yeah, it looks a lot like the pictures of 'gaint octopi'.
Comment icon #8 Posted by lookatallthepeople on 22 April, 2005, 17:34
looks real to me. im sure theres alot of creatures like this in deep water.
Comment icon #7 Posted by alienplayalolz on 3 April, 2005, 9:41
I heard it was a rotting giant octopus or somthing..it looks a lot like a Parasaurolophus, without the horn.
Comment icon #6 Posted by recycledicecream on 21 March, 2005, 4:47
I know exactly what this is :D I read about it. It's a species of whale that I can't quite remember how to spell. They're very rare. I doubt a living specimen has ever been sighted. The heads are large, quite dolphin like and the body is very elongated and snake-like. Checkit.

it could be anything... i hardly see a body shape
Comment icon #4 Posted by synergy10 on 3 March, 2005, 3:17
