"I like the little circular design on it back." ... That's a ripple. Or the eye. I'm not sure just how... erm... blind you are. This makes me kinda upset... the eye looks frightened. Poor little sweetie.

That site ain't working for me, any other place with more pics? And it was alive? What about the fairly recent discovery of the first live giant squid ever seen, that wasn't this one _

One last thing--there were about a half dozen photos of this squid taken. It was still very much alive when the snapshots were taken, but it died shortly thereafter. And yeah, that eye IS creepy--gives me nightmares, I tells ya! Dr. Steve O'Shea stated that its shape is from the eye contracting.

I believe this squid (actually, an immature giant squid) was dragged to an inlet by a Japanese fishing boat. The Humbolt squid, on the other hand, IS a rather big squid (up to 10+ feet in length), but lives in the Sea of Cortez south of Baja, Mexico (south of California).

Actually, this is not a Humbolt squid. It actually IS a true giant squid (Architeuthis dux). I originally came across this photo at www.tonmo.org which is a site dedicated to cephalopod stuides. Dr. Steve O'Shea (the world's foremost giant squid expert) confirmed it as Architeuthis.

Woah, creepy. My boyfriend loves stuff like this but he'd probably never do marine biology or whatever because big things scare him. :]

Yay, squid! When I grow up (excuse that cliche phrase), I want to go into marine biology because the deep sea is AWESOME, and I'm determined to help find a live giant squid or die trying. But seriously, that squid is huge. It scares me a little.
