The story usually tacked with this photo is super interesting. They say that the photos were taken on November 19th, 1995, while a whole town watched helplessly as a building nearly a hundred years old burned down (it was built in 1905) and one man named Tony O'Rahilly took pictures, one of which happened to show the figure of a little girl standing in the flames. They say that the girl is a child named Jane Churm, who apparently accidentally set fire to a thatched roof in a house on the same foundation with a candle in 1677 and died along with everyone else who lived there in the blaze. ...

I think that this photo was proven to be a hoax when someone spotted the same girl from this photo on a postcard. I think someone already said it and I'm not sure they let me post links on this site, but source: ( shropshirestar . com/news/2010/05/17/ does-postcard-solve-ghost-riddle/ )

Real and there is history about this child living in the same building many years before who died in a fire. I will look for the link later.

This pic is beleived to have been taken from inside a burned building for insurance purpose, and when they looked at the pic they spotted the girl but could not determine if she just happened to be a real girl looking at the damaged building or a ghost, just that the guy did not see her at the time the pic was taken.....nice pic anyway....

I wonder just what was the subject of this photograph, not anything else except to photograph a pile of scrap: suspect.

this has since been proved to be a fake, the little girl is an image from a postcard superimposed over the top

This is one of the only photos i believe that scares me so much. To me, it doesn't look tampered with, as it's just such an old looking photo, i don't believe this was taken in 1995 though, although i have no proof to back up my thinking. Creepy, the way she's just stood looking almost at the camera. Could just be a small girl stood down there, but still...on the other hand, it might not be. amazing

This picture was taken at a building just down the road from where I live in Shropshire and it is very true. It was in the local papers for weeks.

She seems to be wearing clothes dated around the turn of the 20th century. Her hair seems to be in ringlets which corroborates her clothes. Jane Churm predates her clothing and hair. The reason she is so spooky is because she is looking straight at the photorapher
Comment icon #46 Posted by everquesterinman on 20 March, 2008, 5:05
I also think this one is real. As far as the time period of the clothing goes. I believe is some way ghost are not ghost at all but "rips" in time that appear under certan weather or temp conditions. this is why they seems to go on doing what they are actucally doing in their time and then when simular things happen in our time they are sometimes seen together. its a therory of mine anywyas.

I believe the photo to be authentic. I have seen it before on TV and other sites. Not that that prooves it is real but many experts state that it is authentic. Who can say whether she is evil, sad, or wearing origami lace? Another case of thinking before commenting. As for seeing her in other pictures: Where? I would like to see these supposed pictures. This is the only one I have seen. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but some do not make any sense whatsoever.

Building looks on fire to me. If not, then there is a VERY bright light in what looks like a rotting down building. I believe this is 100% untouched...but that doesn't mean I'm saying that I 100% believe that to be a ghost. Fire, like clouds, can make all sorts of strange shapes...but I will say that I trust this photo as being of a real ghost as much as any other I have seen....ANYWHERE. (And no....I have no idea what type of clothe her dress is made of.)
Comment icon #42 Posted by murba on 24 July, 2007, 20:41
You should google Jane Churm, a girl with that name died in a fire there in the 1600s

Is the building on fire or not? How did she burn it down? Was it just the house or the town? And how can anyone tell what kind of material she is wearing. I like the pic and I'm going to go with real for now :)

Hi my names Matt Willis I live in the town where this picture is taken Wem in shropshire of England. I believe that the picture is real, as the story goes that a little girl started the great fire of Wem in the 1600s. Which litterally burnt the whole town to the ground. Aledgedly she started the fire when carrying a candle up to bed. There has however been some specualation over the image in the area.
Comment icon #34 Posted by voodoodaddy on 3 December, 2005, 11:05
The caption for this photo is in error. The building was not on fire when this photograph was taken. The image in the picture is the ghost of a girl who died when she accidently set the building on fire back in 1677. She showed up in this photo AFTER the building caught fire a second time. How recently is anyone's guess, but apparently recent enough for someone to be able to snap a photo.

There is no way this pic could have been taken in '95! My Mother (who is English) tells me that this pic has been hawked around for as long as she can remember, at least 30 years, and probably longer. My Mother is not in the least dramatic, and would not say something she knew to be untruthful.

I don't understand how fallenangel can tell what material the girl's dress is made from. Personally I can't even tell what she is wearing, for sure anyways.

VALARLIGHT, you are correct...this image of the little girl is very common. In fact, she is in (or placed on) some of the other pictures in this very section of paranormal images. Very bad fake (in my opinion).
Comment icon #26 Posted by valarlight on 8 August, 2005, 2:10
the nun is a piece of debris although it had me convinced for a while. The girl though, i'm sure she is a fake, she wasn't a girl standing thier at the time and it is possible thats its and optical illusion by some debris. But i'm sure i've seen this girl before, she is so common i know i've seen her before in photos!

Fallenangel, how the heck can you see origami lace in that photo? Please tell me you were joking! This picture is also on my "list" I keep blathering about. That little girl creeps me out, too. Of course, all little ghost children creep me out. . .Especially the girls. *shivers and thinks about The Ring*

How can anyone say she looks evil? You can barely get a clear picture of her expression.
Comment icon #21 Posted by filoli on 16 May, 2005, 13:38
This one could just be real. The photo was indeed taken by a local resident of Shropshire, Tony O'Rahilly, from across the street, using a 200mm lens. After the image was developed, he sent it to be analized and Dr. Vernon Harrison, former president of the Royal Photographic Society analized both the photo and the negative and was satisfied that neither had been doctored. However, Dr. Harrison considers himself something of a skeptic and believes it is probably a trick of smoke and light. I have...

Fallenangel, origami lace was around in 1995. Her clothes seem to date from 1890-1905.

william_h: I see the nun, too. I also see the outline of a woman in the window on the left, almost like the face is protring through the bars. I also see something evil in this child's face. It's unnerving. Great photo.
Comment icon #17 Posted by william_h on 7 April, 2005, 19:55
it looks like another figure to the left like a nun or something right in the middle of the right window?
Comment icon #16 Posted by winkie05 on 29 March, 2005, 6:28
Fallenangel, you were able to tell all that by this black and white photo? Or do you have access to this same pic but better photo quality? I would love to see this in color.
Comment icon #15 Posted by fallenangel on 14 March, 2005, 23:55
well unfortunetlly this image is a fake due to the date the photo was taken, and the dress the girl is wearing and the material it is made of which from the date of the photo the material of the dress although nice, origami lace wasn't made at the time of the photo it was after , so the only way this could be real is if the photographer went back in time with the girl to take the picture. hey it was a good try.

falling debris.. no way. the fact he has his own darkroom which he developed the photo in is kinda suspicious but its a great image

...it has already been mentioned, the place has quite a colourful history, so who knows...
Comment icon #12 Posted by hoagy on 14 February, 2005, 20:28
Actually I believe it was a guy who happened to have hic camera at the time of the fire and snapped a shot. I saw a tv programme recently where they interviewed the guy who took this photo, and developed this in his own 'darkroom'. The picture has been scrutinised, and is actually thought to be a fake, although not officially called one (yet) after being looked at by people from the Museum of Moving Image. Another theory is that it's an optical illusion bought on by a piece of falling debris. But like...

Alcatraz, the person taking the picture was a reporter. Maybe what we think is a girl is just some things when seen at that angle looks like a girl?

Comment icon #6 Posted by valour on 15 December, 2004, 10:20
This little girl originally burnt the building down in 1655, by being careless with a candle. So the story goes. I believe this is a real apparition, but not of a little girl, of an evil spirit.
Comment icon #5 Posted by spooky7272 on 14 December, 2004, 4:17
why is the photographer taking a picture while the house is burning?
Comment icon #4 Posted by insight on 18 November, 2004, 8:33
Perhaps this was the spirit that inclined the young girl to play with those matches and burn it down. Perhaps this spirit was involved in the second burning as well. One would have to see an actual photo of the girl in question and compare features to decide if this is a ghostly image of the girl. I am disinclined to side with the Hollywood theories of "leeslaughtr".
Comment icon #3 Posted by gargyrl on 7 November, 2004, 4:31
I gotta say that I don't believe that anyone would put a child at peril while the building was burning, I have nothing smart mouth to say about this one.
Comment icon #2 Posted by leeslaughtr on 3 November, 2004, 22:34
This is real and being that she destroyed the building once before by being careless with fire she is saddened that it happened again. She is the girl who burned it down first but not intentionaly.I think maybe this place should be destroyed to let her spirit rest.
Comment icon #1 Posted by ladyapril on 28 October, 2004, 8:01
I would have to say that this one creeps me out, because of the history behind it! This building was burned down onwe time before this, when a little girl was playing with matches and threw one on the roof, and burnt the place and died in the fire. The building was reconstructed and then burnt down again just a few years later, when a news reporter snapped the photo he was going to do a story on the fire, the little girl appeared in the dorrway when the photo was developed! I think its real!
