Ghosts of the USS Watertown
Image is believed to be in the public domain.

Uploader comment: When two crew members of the S.S Watertown died in a tragic accident in 1924, the other men reported seeing their ghostly faces in the water off the side of the ship for some time. This image was allegedly captured of the faces.

This is one where you can talk about the different ways it could have come around but at the end of it all? We'll never know and that for me makes it one of the best around

I can't comment much on the validity of it but they both look like that face on mars

I could take 1000 pictures of ocean waves and in maybe 5 of those pictures I could probably see some rudimentary faces. And in one of them I might see two faces. The photo is creepy on first glance but take a closer look at the faces. They're very basic. The one on the left has one eye very much bigger. And were they *both* bald and moustachioed? They are also obviously part of the water. This photo is just a rare occasion when random patterns in ocean waves make a recognisable pattern. This is just the equivalent of seeing a dragon shape in the clouds. If you half close you eyes the faces...

...unusual, but the sixth showed the faces of Meehan and Courtney.
Comment icon #26 Posted by voodoodaddy on 3 December, 2005, 10:49
This photograph was taken in 1925, not '24. January, to be exact. The faces in the waves are those of James Courtney and Michael Meehan, who were overcome by fumes while cleaning out the cargo hatch of the S.S. Watertown, when it was en route from the west coast of the U.S. to the Panama Canal. They were buried at sea on December 4, 1924. For the next month and a half, the mens' faces appeared and disappeared alongside the ship. It was in January of '25 when six photos were taken. five showed nothing un...

Actually, I take back what I earlier said, he took SEVERAL pictures. The rest didn't show anything special. He then took the camera and locked it in a safe on board and kept it there until they got home (where ever that was).

This is another photo on the every popular "best ghost photos" list. The story behind it is very interesting. The faces were there on and off, following the boat for a long time. They finally got to land and the faces were still there, so the captain got a cheap camera and took a picture.

it looks like two old men skinny thats scary!!
Comment icon #20 Posted by filoli on 16 May, 2005, 13:21
Again, to make a determination of authenticity, the entire photo needs to be shown in conjunction with the cropped blow-up.

there's all kinds of funky stuff goin on in this picture. It's kinda like looking at the sky and seeing clouds that resemble familiar shapes. There are a lot of faces in the picture though.

Cameras hallucinate? *walks off whistling*
Comment icon #17 Posted by mtswf4lf on 22 March, 2005, 10:46
I see the two men and two babys with BULGING EYES but no women. I belive its real.
Comment icon #16 Posted by demented on 21 March, 2005, 2:21
It is also proven that when people are out to see for long periods of time, they start to hallucinate.

Unfortunately, this picture is too low-res and grainy to deterimine much. I'm sure you could find faces in many such photos of turbulent water.

I saw this pic on tv. What I don't get is why skepics have an opinion on these matters if their clearly non believers & enter these things with a closed mind.

good thing the ghost on the left is right between those to ropes and his friend on the right is at the very same angle he is.
Comment icon #3 Posted by gemesis23 on 8 October, 2004, 10:15
I see more than two faces in this picture.
Comment icon #2 Posted by jokas on 1 October, 2004, 6:47
I'd be more worried about the bigass arrows pointing at stuff on the ship.

I have seen this photogragh featured on Television Documentaries, in Publications and on other Websites about Ghosts. After learning all that I have about this picture, I have little doubt in my mind but that this is indeed a photo of a pair of actual specters. As I recall, no one has ever been able to reasonably disprove it's authenticity. By all accounts from those seamen who witnessed this phenomenon, these were benevolent spirits that seemed to be trying to protect their ship.
