An expectant mother got the surprise of her life when her baby was born weighing a whopping 13lbs.
Alisha Hernandez, who had been booked in for a cesarean section at Colorado's San Luis Valley Hospital, was astonished to discover that her newborn daughter, Mia Yasmin Garcia, emerged weighing almost twice as much as everyone had been expecting.

Even the medical staff at the hospital were amazed at how much the new baby weighed and admitted that they'd never seen anything like it before.
"They're all shocked that they're seeing a baby like that," said Francisco Garcia, the baby's father.

Baby Mia Yasmin was initially flown to a children's hospital in Aurora due to breathing difficulties but is now doing well and her parents are hoping to be able to take her home within the next week.

The world record for the heaviest ever birth belonged to Anna Bates, herself a giant of 2.27m in height, who at her home in Ohio in 1879 gave birth to a baby weighing a staggering 23lbs.

Sounds like the Mom may have had gestational diabetes (that will produce huge chubby babies). I got a niece that had a 13lb baby and they said the reason was she had diabetes.

Did you have him weeks overdue your due date? I did with my son. Although, I did have gestational diabetes with him as well as my daughter. Actually, I had him a week before my due date!

Apparently my nanna (mom's mom) was 13 pounds at birth. As far as I know my grand grandmother didn't have diabetes. Nanna so far has been the biggest baby we know of anyone in our family having. Biggest has been 7lb and 4 oz

Blimey that's a big baby!! My two boys were a fair size. My first was 4 days over and was 8lb 15oz and my second was a whole TWO WEEKS late and was 10lb 8oz!! I'm currently pregnant again (surrogate for my sister who cannot have her own children) so it will be interesting to see how big / small this one is when it arrives
