Giant 13-pound baby is born in Colorado

Image Credit: sxc.hu Alisha Hernandez, who had been booked in for a cesarean section at Colorado's San Luis Valley Hospital, was astonished to discover that her newborn daughter, Mia Yasmin Garcia, emerged weighing almost twice as much as everyone had been expecting.

Even the medical staff at the hospital were amazed at how much the new baby weighed and admitted that they'd never seen anything like it before. "They're all shocked that they're seeing a baby like that," said Francisco Garcia, the baby's father.

Baby Mia Yasmin was initially flown to a children's hospital in Aurora due to breathing difficulties but is now doing well and her parents are hoping to be able to take her home within the next week.

The world record for the heaviest ever birth belonged to Anna Bates, herself a giant of 2.27m in height, who at her home in Ohio in 1879 gave birth to a baby weighing a staggering 23lbs.
