400 wolves terrorise remote Russian town

A 'super pack' of 400 wolves have started hunting together due to lack of food.
Wolves who normally hunt in packs of six to seven are joining forces to hunt bigger, more threatening prey in an effort to survive. Wildlife behaviour experts believe many small packs have joined together to form one 'super pack' due to a lack of their normal diet of rabbits and other smaller animals. The size of this large pack allows them to hunt animals such as horses and could eventually lead to them attacking humans.
Stepan Rozhin, an administration official for the Verkhoyansk district in Russia, said: 'To protect the town we are creating 24 teams of armed hunters, who will patrol the neighbourhood on snowmobiles and set wolf traps. 'But we need more people. Once the daylight increases, the hunters will start shooting predators from helicopters. '

I'm also one of those that don't accept this story as credible. The Alpha position in a pack this large would be almost impossible to enact or sustain, with 399 other competitors to call into line. And I've also searched for other sources to this story and all the links thus far seem to be feeding the UK Mail article from their sites. No investigative reports wherein animal biologists, for instance, have ventured to the area to study the matter. It "has to do with it" because I've been exposed to danger that, I feel, is on equal level. Oooo, I was all warm and toasty because I was in the south, so it makes it better, right? No, it doesn't. No cold to worry about, sure, but more venomous and disease ridden bugs and animals. One risk might be lower, but the others increase proportionally. The only reason I know anything about this part of the world is because it (specifically, by name) has popped up within recent months within environmental groups that have begun researching in the area. Your opinions although clearly erudite, are too simple & really quite naive. These people live by subsistence agriculture -- wolves that maim or eat their horses and reindeer can effect their quality of life health, and perhaps even their very survival. Simply put, People Wolves -- unless of course you are a misanthrope? Yes Fencing is that expensive and that is not taking into account the costs of materials suited to the Siberian environment, Electric fences even more expensive will work briefly, the wolves will poke and probe and will find their way through. These "lazy land rapers" as you seem to put it (I suppose you'll throw me in with that tag)have a more intimate relationship and knowledge of the earth and nature than any eco-warrior types. Did you not read the post G&D left about the environmental groups that will pay for the stuff? So. . .talking about it being expensive is using an excuse that doesn't exist. It seems to me like some people are just being a little ignorant and ignoring a few things just so they can support these people. And I have seen some of Ghosties work and I must say, she's not joking when she says she deals with a lot of dangerous situations and places. Did she not post that after me? And nature will bring them down on its own. The reason the resources are being exhausted in the first place is because of the deforestation and all in that area, even I've seen information on that problem. It's become a big deal in environmental circles. And no, the first post she did on it was on the last page or somewhere around there. It'll work itself out, and the people have the choice to let it work out on its own, with help from others. . .And it seems like people on here aren't even considering it as a possibility. If I lived there I would kill the "hunters" daring to attack the wolfs, go in their ways and go mad pretending to be a wolf and communicate with them... I already know some harsh langua in wolfish, how to say your not a danger to them. It's peoples mistake for chosing such a place to live. What the ****? Wolfish? Are you for real? I would trust my sister and brother wolf more than a human, for they are not like humans and do not lie. What brother and sister wolf?

I am taking this seriously, perhaps you don't appreciate that these peoples livelihoods are at stake here. Are you taking this seriously? or are you just seeing this as another injustice to the natural world? They live of their horses? In winter? And here I though they were hunters into their bones that was living of selling fur... and that those that HAVE farm animals actually have them in houses in the winter. A horse or two don't meen much truly in compare to the food source like a sheep, reindeer or even cows. In my eyes, killing for revenge a whole family, a whole pack is what I would fin... [More]

And here I though they were hunters into their bones that was living of selling fur... and that those that HAVE farm animals actually have them in houses in the winter. A horse or two don't meen much truly in compare to the food source like a sheep, reindeer or even cows. Barbed wire? WHO SAID ANYTHING OF SUCH A HORRIBLE THING!!! Man, your sick. Do you know how many unececary deaths such thing causes? A simple woodfence around the village, like what a forth have would suffie, they have wood all around themself, why not as well use some of it? It would maybe kill many trees, but trees can grow again. Other lifes simply die and can never come back. Anything is cheper than killing.
