SETI suspended due to lack of funds

SETI's search for extraterrestrial life has been suspended until it can secure more funding.
Due to financial difficulties the Allen Telescope Array has been temporarily closed down, impacting not only SETI but other mainstream radio astronomy projects as well. There is hope however - it is thought the US Air Force may be interested in funding the project so that they can keep track of orbital debris.
The SETI Institute is suspending its search for extraterrestrial radio beacons using its most advanced alien signal-seeking tool while it hunts for new sources of funding.

This is what makes me sad about it. "The program needs about $5 million over the next two years to support the telescope facility." I realize that is alot of money to folks like me and you, but honestly, it's chump change when it comes to anything the government does. We spend well over that per day fighting wars we were supposed to be out of by now. Our 'candidates' for President spend more than that for TV commercials. It seems to be important work, hopefully they'll find the funds somewhere. A 30 second commercial spot on Oprah is 1 million...... http://www.nbcchicago.com/entertainment/tele... [More]

You really think SETI and the government haven't had conversations about what happens if they make contact ? Its not SETI running to the press out of the gate it would be very controlled at lest that what Washington would like. I doubt that any government cares about SETI. It's not a government project. If some scientists think they received a signal from outer space, not many people will care. And you don't just "make contact" and see pictures of Hitler like in the movie. It's much more complicated than that. You receive a signal. You try to prove it's artificial. Then if you succeed a small ... [More]

Why would we need a radiotelescope to find them. They are "falling out of the skies like flies" And have been since before we ever saw them. Sorry for those who lost their cool jobs though.

Great. Obama can spend my money on ghetto people, but not keep SETI running. Nice job you socialist turd.

If we ever recieve a signal, it might come from so far away that by the time we recieve it, that race might be super advanced and maybe hostile. I DEFINITELY would not return the signal without thinking things through. Or more likely, become extinct.
