Doug Niblack was surfing when he hit something hard and found himself standing on the back of a shark.
"It was pretty terrifying just seeing the shape emerge out of nothing and just being under me," he said. Looking down at his feet Doug could see the shark's dorsal fin in front of him and a full 10ft of the shark's back. "And the fin coming out of the water. It was just like the movies."
Doug Niblack was trying to catch another wave before going to work, when his longboard hit something hard as rock off the Oregon Coast and he suddenly found himself standing on the back of a thrashing great white shark.

A surfer claims he was knocked off his board by a great white shark and ended up standing on the predator for several seconds. Honestly, I think there is some truth to this. I wouldn't call it "surfing" in any way, but I can believe that he got knocked off his board and ended up standing on the shark for a moment or two. I think a sharks back would be way too slippery to stand on, let alone 'surf' on. Actually, shark skin is incredibly rough. It's made up of things called "dermal denticles", which make it feel much like sandpaper. So he'd certainly have the traction should he be lucky enough t... [More]

factually speaking for a sec - sharks aren't slippery - sharks have a unique skin that is actually quite rough - it helps them swim faster... and has actually been used as sandpaper in the past Actually, shark skin is incredibly rough. It's made up of things called "dermal denticles", which make it feel much like sandpaper. So he'd certainly have the traction should he be lucky enough to land directly on the shark. Hmm, I never knew that. Thank you for sharing that information. I guess you learn something new everyday. Lucky for me, I've never been close enough to a shark find that information... [More]

[ No, a shark's skin is far from slippery. It's actually somewhat abrasive. As for whether or not this happened? Who among us can say unless we were there, the world is a strange place at times. quote name=BiffSplitkins' timestamp='1318855495' post='4089109] I'm calling shenanigans on this one too! I think a sharks back would be way too slippery to stand on, let alone 'surf' on.

I don't see any reason not to believe this one either. Now granted, I wouldn't argue against someone who said that his time frame may be off. When something makes you p*** yourself as that very well may, a second can seem like ten. Not that 1-5 seconds is a huge difference in time anyway though. And being a surfer it's probably reasonable that he could balance himself in an odd situation a bit longer than average.

Actually, with sharks the skin is rough in one direction, and smooth in another. So it would be fairly slick to try to stand on. Might b why it was only a few moments. However, I call shenanigans. Maybe if he was Australian I'd believe it.
