Are you more likely to die on your birthday ?

A Swiss study has revealed that you are 14% more likely to die on your birthday than on any other day.

The remarkable statistic was reached following an analysis of over 2.4 million deaths over 40 years, with the risks climbing even higher the older you are. Several theories have been put forward to explain why this should be so, some researchers believe that the 'postponement theory' might explain a lot of cases; this is when a gravely ill person might try to hold out until their birthday in an attempt to reach the next age milestone.

Other theories include deaths due to drug overdosing at parties and even those who take the birthday blues one step too far and opt to end their own life.

"Results extracted from a vast amount of data concluded that there were 13."

I always wondered about that. I've heard of quite a few people dying on their respective birthdays, including my own grandfather. Guess I never thought into the party-hard aspect. Would not apply to Grandpa, though; cancer got him.

If you think about the odds against it... you have 364 other days you could die on, then it seems less random. I have also noticed walking around graveyards a higher rate birth month and death month being the same... or maybe I just notice those more. My Grandmother died on her birthday after being in a coma for a week. And both my grandparents on my Mom's side died in their birth month. Never really thought off the odds though.

Do these statistics include the number of immediate deaths that can occur when a child is born?

Haha Make sure you enjoy your 30's then, cos your 40's is when you start worrying about how much electricity you're using etc. lol

Am wondering if anyone has had a double-party. Clowns and balloons etc at funeral. That would be a funeral worth going to, imo. Imagine the fun to be had. A stripper leaping out the coffin as everyone is saying the final goodbyes? lol

I deal with a lot of people through work and hear of more deaths just after the Christmas period (this is dealing with a predominately Christian/Catholic clientele). I get the impression that people seem to be able to hold out for an event before passing away. For example, Christmas is coming, family are visiting and life is worth holding onto. This can keep people who are close to there time of passing going for a few extra day/weeks/months, once the event has passed these people let go and pass away or upon returning to a cold lonely home enthusiasm can waiver allowing death to prevail. I co... [More]

This would definitely push the results in favour of being more likely to die on your birthday, not sure how much more though.
