The asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter could have been formed during the early solar system when Jupiter and Saturn were still in the process of moving to their original orbits. Scientists investigated the belt as part of a new study in to the development of the solar system and how the planets moved to where they are today.
Today's asteroid belt may have been shaped by a tumultuous period in the early solar system when Jupiter and Saturn moved out of their original orbits, a new simulation suggests. Ultimately the work could help refine a picture of how quickly the planets moved and where they got their start."
