Russia to send life to Phobos in new mission

In its first mission to Mars in over 10 years Russia plan to send a probe to one of the martian moons Phobos later this year. The mission known as 'Phobos-Grunt' will attempt to return samples of Phobos back to the Earth, it will also be carrying a canister containing microbial life forms in an experiment to test the theory that life could have been carried to Earth inside meteorites.
No one knows if there is life on Mars, but if all goes well with a Russian science mission later this year, there will be life on the Martian moon Phobos — for a short time anyway. An assortment of critters and microbes are scheduled to make a round-trip journey to Phobos as passengers aboard a Russian spacecraft, scheduled to launch in October. "

I wonder how much contraversary went on about sending life to an unknown system? I thought that we were not going to do this .What if it crashes and Life starts there? even microbial life.Didnt I read about that about us sending things to Mars?

I fear this is going to be another "foreign flora and fauna pose threat to" scenario. Although, in this scale, the theory of evolution has to be correct and these microbial life forms needs to survive in their new environment. Then the problem may only surface in the next thousand millenniums or more.

would be pretty cool if this life adapts and evolves quickly. Like you know the movie Evolution (2002) with Mulder from the X Files how everything evolved so quick well yea who knows what these microbial life forms would do there.

Is sending microbes to another planet a wise thing to do? What if that moon has living microbial life what if our micronbe survive and are invasive and begin destroying the xeno microbes have we not then waged war on a alien species even if it is microbial ( if microbial life is there) ?

Phobos has no life on it.

I will Assume the Russian Scientists are just as concerned as we about possible contamination if things go wrong. And will have a Destruct and sterilize compartment in case of trouble. And the mission dose have some merit.

I hope the martians came up with a better name then Phobos for their moon.

I dont think we should worry about something that may take millions of years to manifest, I think the problem is do we trust a country who will be returning possible micro killer to Earth which could kill us in months. They dont really have a good reputation with keeping things safe, i.e Keiv Nuke, lost nuke weapons to the black market after the wall came tumbling down after the cold war. Not to mention the millions of gallons of heavy water to where they hide them does not make a safe concerned nation who has a habit of invading anything possible... eek

I hope the martians came up with a better name then Phobos for their moon. I kinda like Phobos. Besides, he is one of the sons of Ares and Aphrodite in Greek mythology. I mean, he's the prodigy of the God of War and the Goddess of Love. He is the result when opposites attract

We humans do like to litter but as Roger said I'm sure the Russians don't want to take unessisary riskd when talking about cross contamination. I would actually be more worried about the return trip and what the probe might bring back as far as microscopic life.
