The tale of John 'Babbacombe' Lee still perplexes to this day, nicknamed 'The Man They Could Not Hang', Lee survived three attempts at hanging over 100 years ago when the gallows trapdoor failed to operate.
Throughout the past 100 years, the myths surrounding John 'Babbacombe' Lee's story have taken on a life of their own. Urban legends, ghostly sightings and tales of supernatural intervention have grown far beyond what anybody in 19th century South Devon could have imagined for the lowly manservant."

I totally agree, sounds like divine intervention to me. Neat story. All I hear from the super-Christians is that YHWH saves a tiny handful of the many Believers and does so with great signs and portents, such as the Virgin Mary appearing in sludge dripping down overpass bridges, all the while choosing that the vast majority of Believers and non-believers will suffer horrible, meaningless deaths. This story sounds nothing like the usual Judeo-Christian flying-Savior parable. There is no "martyr" here. The hanged man is an obvious murderous psychopath who very badly needed to be removed from lif... [More]

...The wood of the trapdoor expanded due to damp conditions, so it wouldn't open. The superstitious morons of the time put this down to God or magic. I would also imagine that reason he was so calm during the trial because he was a total psychopath with no emotions or feelings of remorse whatsoever.

As he said he knew that he was inncent and therfor he did not want to get disturbed though it is humanly to do so.... Surely this is not any divine intervention ...If the experts check the reasons would flow out.. And Dear Samael.. Never call them morons because they may be good in their life..You never come to know Just your are forcing your beliefs Though I dont deny it may be superstition but I would never call them like you did Thanks B???

Hasn't this already been explained? I watched a program to do with this quite some time back; I believe it was something to do with weight and the stress on the hinges of the platform. It was something like that.

Are you kidding me?!?! Psychotic murderers? Do you even know anything about the case? How are you so sure he was guilty in a case that happened 100 years ago that you know nothing about. Nobody said it was surprising that he "begs his gods to save him from certain death" its the fact that trapdoor failed three times in a row after being tested and checked to be working three times. I'm not saying its something supernatural but statisticly speaking thats 1 in a million. YWHW attended to an interesting story not a psychotic murderer which in your logic must mean they dont care about dying cancer... [More]
