For years researchers have attempted to piece together the possible whereabouts of the fabled Atlantis. Several different locations have been considered, Doug Fisher believes the evidence points to South America as the most probable.
Doug Fisher: Like a fingerprint, Plato establishes a complex and very specific array of Atlantis' geographical features comprising alignments, relative positioning and dimensions, which limit the site for Atlantis to only one possible location. A fresh new attempt to identify the lost continent by the strictest adherence to these specifications reveals South America was almost certainly Atlantis while also revealing the possible location of the ringed city and insight into its fate."

Even if South America was what inspired Atlantis, it does not explain many of the basic questions asked of the myth. If Atlantis had the technology to travel the open ocean and had superior weapons, then how did the then stone using Greeks manage to beat them and send them running? And, I'll just add, not every city that is found to have a ditch or moat is Atlantis. The ditch is one of the oldest forms of fortification, and shows up in all ancient cultures.

I think it's a lot more likely that Plato got the exact measurements wrong, and that the core deductions we can make about Atlantis are: its name, its general location, its time, and its destruction. Size and political themes in the texts seem a lot less likely to survive the winds of time, but for those four points we actually have supporting mythological and geographical evidence. 'course, nothing's for certain, and this is a great attempt -- and I suspect the attempts will never stop.

'The Atlantis was destroyed and sank beneath the waves.' Years ago i used to be interested in the weather facsimiles and charts broadcast by different countries. One day i picked one up, it was to do with high altitude wind speeds in knots, and i noticed how close the top right hand part of South America (The widest bit) is to Africa. The left hand side with the curve on it. A few years later i learned some Roman jars with V shaped bottoms had been found by divers somewhere of the coast of the top part of South America. Now then, i don't think the Romans or Greeks sailed there deliberately, bu... [More]

I reckon i know who drew the maps as well. It was the women the Mediterranean men decided to keep as slaves and as wives. Hence the map being upside down, and the Roman's later taking an interest in Britannia. Sorry i forgot the bit in bold.

For those interested and having Google Earth installed, the following link displays the rings of Atlantis scaled to the circular landform in the Parana Delta. Rings of Atlantis on Google Earth The outermost ring represents Atlantis' outer channel of water with an outside diameter of 3.10 miles (27 stadia) and inside diameter of 2.41 miles (21 stadia). You can use the program's ruler feature (ToolsRuler) to verify the diameters. Select Historical Imagery from the menu (ViewHistorical Imagery) to get a clearer view of the island from 2003. There you will see some unique darkened areas mostly ret... [More]

Doug Fisher then decided to completely ignore the main point of Plato's fable - namely - that Atlantis, unlike South America, was destroyed and sank beneath the waves." Harte Better late than never. As I had said, the sinking of Atlantis WAS NOT IGNORED, but while it is addressed in the article the following response is more detailed and will save time searching. (In case this material seems familiar to some, it should be noted that this was posted in similar form as a news link. It was only recently that I noticed that I had neglected to provide a proper response to Harte or any other visitor... [More]
