Will regular travel in outer space result in changes to the human brain ? Apollo 14 astronaut Ed Mitchell experienced what he described as a "profound sense of universal connectedness", often referred to as the "Overview effect".
In February, 1971, Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell experienced the little understood phenomenon sometimes called the “Overview Effect”. He describes being completely engulfed by a profound sense of universal connectedness. "

Naturally regular travel in Space will enhance and expand our minds, that is inevitable. Whether it will 'change' our brains is a question that only scientists can tell us. You know, we can all mock a great hero... and he is, whatever you may think of him. He was a pioneer, exploring places that we can only dream about just now, taking his life in his hands, (remember the seven!) The fact is that those who mock him have no experience whatsoever to equate to his, in this respect, but you are all so sure that what he says is nonsense. So, I would ask all those who laugh at him here, this questio... [More]

Timothy Leary suggested that there were circuits in the brain which were specially adapted to experience weightlessness. The Qualities of these circuits were bliss and universal oneness. He suggested that they were the same circuits which mystics experience when they talk of Nivarna, and that these circuits are built in in readiness for space travel. The fact that a significant number of astronauts talk about having had prefound mystical experiences is suggestive that he may have been onto something. The fact that one person who has this experience goes a bit lupey is hardly proof of anything,... [More]

I think there is a huge difference between Mitchell and Paul .... Mitchell didn't fall from a horse and have an hallucination . nor has Mitchell attached any man made rules to his experience and claim people either believe or suffer. I'm not really accusing Mitchell of been on a par with St Paul. My point is that if you have one mystical experience you are liable to misinterpret it and run like a headless chicken into the wilds. Only by repeating the experience can you develop context and perspective. There is a world of difference between what St Paul did with his "partial" one off mystical e... [More]

I'm not really accusing Mitchell of been on a par with St Paul. Let's see; you said: The fact that one person who has this experience goes a bit lupey is hardly proof of anything, look at the craziness that St Paul created from his one mystical experience. Sounds awfully like it to me... Lupey? What qualifications do you have to assert that claim? My point is that if you have one mystical experience you are liable to misinterpret it and run like a headless chicken into the wilds. lol...it's funny since I wrote about a similar "event" that happened about 3 or 4 months ago, but it was induced by cannabis. I was smoking and just thinking kind of the way Ashiene explained the different perspectives. But I started out small...from subatomic particles all the way to beyond our galaxy. It's hard to really put into words and explain to someone who has not had that type of experience without sounding insane and so I can see why most keep quiet about it. The expansion is mind boggling and I was actually left a little tired, but really enlightened I guess you could say...it's a f... [More]

I shouldn’t worry too much about that. It may surprise you to know that many people experience such phenomenon without the need, or use for such substances.
