A vast Antarctic glacier is thinning four times faster than it was a decade ago British scientists have revealed, with the surface of the ice dropping by 16m a year and pointing to the glacier lasting a sixth of its original estimated lifespan.
One of the largest glaciers in Antarctica is thinning four times faster than it was 10 years ago, according to research seen by the BBC. A study of satellite measurements of Pine Island glacier in west Antarctica reveals the surface of the ice is now dropping at a rate of up to 16m a year.

I wiki`d this: Recent accelerationFloating ice shelf at the downstream end of Pine Island Glacier. The crack shows the start of a large iceberg calvingIn 1981 Terry Hughes proposed that the region around Pine Island Bay may be a "weak underbelly" of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.[9] This is based on the fact that, unlike the majority of the large West Antarctic ice streams, those flowing into the Amundsen Sea are not protected from the ocean by large floating ice shelves. Also, although the surface of the glacier is above sea level, the base lies below sea level and slopes downward inland, this... [More]

I wiki`d this:Well, duh! Why didn`t the BBC even attempt to give an explanation? Because there are none. The planet is a living organism with periods of glaciation and then the opposite also happen.. Around the year 1000 CE, Greenland wasn't ice covered like it is now. Otherwise it wouldn't have been called Greenland by the Vikings.

At least Global Warming wasn't mentioned. Yeah, who wants to hear about science, anyways? The whole article appears to tell us plenty (doom & gloom) but explains zip. The article did not intend to explain the science behind global warming. If you want more information on the science, read Nature or something. Was there any actual 'intense' research done hands-on, or scientists sitting on their butts behind PCs relying totally on satellite data? Yeah guys, Research only counts if it involves pushups! I mean, it's not like Satellites can provide far more accurate and detailed information abo... [More]

Waterworld is one of my favorite movies, sounds good to me! lol =D lol i love that bit on the Simpson where Milhouse ads like 40 quarters the character takes two steps and its game over. Do not worry we will land man on mars and before you know it we will be destroying its glaciers too

I wiki`d this: Well, duh! Why didn`t the BBC even attempt to give an explanation? Great post. The BBC article also fails to mention that the PIG drainage area contains significantly less than one percent (1%) of the ice in Antarctica and with the exception of the Wilkins Ice Shelf, also relatively small, and other smaller WAIS glaciers, overall ice mass in Antarctica is holding steady. This is just another propaganda piece to promote warming hysteria.

The BBC article What does the BBC have to do with this? I think your initial premise is flawed, here.
