Scientists continue to explore the possibility of using a solar sail to propel spacecraft at great speeds through space without the need for heavy payloads of fuel.
Sailing spacecraft will be able to navigate space and reach impressive speeds without carrying heavy payloads of fuel. While sailing remains a purely Earth-bound pursuit for now, it could one day be the means of propulsion for hitherto impossible space missions.

If this proves to be succesful, there would be a lot less fuel required for sure! Thanks PotterManiac

There is one small-cost project that tries to find out the same thing.

Possibly a good Idea for very small probes but not some thing I see as practical. And I wonder about Micro- Meteor damage to the very thin sail. There's just not enough knowledge of how plentiful they are between the planets. One cloud of dirt shuts down the whole thing and you have another piece of space junk to contend with.
