A new scanner is being trialled at Manchester Airport that is able to produce "naked" images of passengers in order to reveal concealed weapons or explosives - a process that leaves little to the imagination.
A trial of a scanner that produces "naked" images of passengers has begun at Manchester Airport. The authorities say it will speed up security checks by quickly revealing any concealed weapons or explosives.

So let me get this right, some foreign perv (it seems there are only foreigners working at UK airports these days) will be able to perv at under age girls through this? No, they cannot. This is not some comic book device that strips people's clothes off. What you get is a fuzzy humanish outline, with bright "cutouts" for metallic objects. It's very much like a regular x-ray, except bigger, fuzzier, and it doesn't show internals very well. Unless the foreign perv get's off to x-ray pics, it's not an issue.

If it makes getting through security that much quicker - I'm all for it! How come I can take my belt off effortlessly whilst at home, but when placed in an airport I'm all fingers and thumbs?! It's going to get better. Right now, you have to stand against the scanner. Give it time, and you'll just be able to walk down the hallway with everyone else, and get scanned on the way in. No lines!

No lines! total recall!... well, close enough. edit to add - do you think that the quality could get better in time? i could see there being a concern of privacy if it did.

This has both sides like a coin...The people get concerned over the privacy but we must remember that if this is put into effect we will have much more efficient security system...These so called machines work under the guarantee of density and human body have no great density so that they only provide very unclear images...though security is a much more bigger issue at the present scenario Thanks B???

I most definitely do, however the "voyeur" threat is never going to be an issue. If the technology gets to the point that you can digitally remove a person's clothing, they will simply replace it with a digital template of a person, much like they did in Total Recall (after all, we don't actually have glowing red bones; that was just how the machine was showing the data). I hope you are being sarcastic. Not to my knowledge. Sarcastic... [More]

Actually, or well, now I didn't read all of the other comments, so maybe someone already said this but what the heck. I read about this new system in a science magazine maybe... 1 or 2 years ago. And they did add that if a perv were to work as guard, he wouldn't get completely satisfied, because the machine automatically finds genetalia and breasts in the picture, and somewhat blurs them. Or well, you won't see any details through the blur, but if there's bomb or a gun behind it, you'll definitely spot something. This should be the very same camera.

Given the number of times I've gone skinny dipping at town swimming holes, it would be hypocritical to get outraged about this. I doubt people who look at an endless stream of bodies 8 hrs. a day/ 5 days a week are going to be especially titillated by their 2nd week of work.

Some guy hidden away, then image is delted, does not bother me in the least. Travel in the USA is hell at major airports, I would welcome this. peace mark

Funny this.. I'm traveling from Manchester airport on December the 19th to go to Iceland over christmas. If it's some hot chick doing the "naked scanning" she doesn't have to scan me to see my johnson, I'll get it out for free
