Modern man had sex with neanderthals

A leading geneticist has stated that neanderthals would have mated with modern man, even though it wasn't clear whether or not such couplings would have been capable of producing offspring.
Modern man and Neanderthals had sex across the species barrier, according to leading geneticist Professor Svante Paabo. Professor Paabo, who is director of genetics at the renowned Max Planck Institution for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, made the claim at a conference in the Cold Springs Laboratory in New York.

Neanderthals were modern humans...with a few genetic disorders from too much inbreeding. Then the Cro Mags-with fewer disorders-entered Europe, and made war upon the Neanderthalers; pretty much making them extinct. There was some interbreeding of the two SUB-species of humans, which produced offspring. If the two 'races' had been different species-like dogs, and cats, or cows, and chickens-they could not have made babies together.

This is an interesting idea, but I doubt it. First of all, the article clearly states that his findings will be released along with his upcoming analysis on the neaderthal genome, which would be very cool. However, I doubt it. As TalkOrigins showed here, the neanderthal mtDNA clearly falls outside of the range of variation of human mtDNA. Although I cannot be sure, I suspect this means that the two species did not interbreed, could not interbreed, or could not produce viable offspring. I mean, technically, it's probable: Heck, odd humans even today have sex with all sorts of weird animals. How... [More]

Of course we had sex with neanderthals. It wasn't like any of the women back then looked incredibly hot.

Neanderthals are not modern humans, but I have no doubt they did have sexual encounters when modern man and Neanders came across each other. We as humans are sexual beings and back then there wasn't so much peer pressure about your reputation if you boned out of your species. LOL sorry. Right about now I'm glad my sig is true. hahaha

It probably did happen occasionally, and if there were "throwbacks" then, I knew one !.Used to work with a chap who had serious brow ridges, incredibly powerful barrel chested figure, short stature, large wide nose,we used to do very hard physical work, this chap in his 50'sor 60's could outwork all us younger chaps who were in our 20's,any injuries he would shrug off in typical Neanderthal style. He was a Breton, came to England with the Free French, back over to France after D-Day (and a few trips over there before) ,won a shedload of medals,he would have terrified anyone up against him !.Had great... Why not? Would looks have mattered so much? I'd love to see the proof, though.

Neanderthals were modern humans...with a few genetic disorders from too much inbreeding. I thought the mtDNA analysis suggests that the two gene pools were separated before homo sapiens became a species. Still, you could be right (not that I know much about the subject). Maybe what we think of as our species is actually just a subspecies. Have they completed the Neanderthal genome yet? Does it have the same number of chromosomes as us? The other "great ape" primates have one more chromosome than we do. At some point two of homo sapiens' chromosomes merged into one long chromosome. If the numbe... [More]
