The search for alien life is growing

As we continue to scour the skies for signs of intelligent extraterrestrial life and as the number of extrasolar planets being discovered steadily increases the hunt for proof that we are not alone is growing by the year.
The wide dishes, 20 feet across and raised high on their pedestals, creaked and groaned as the winds from an approaching snowstorm pushed into this highland valley.

is it worth taking the risk searching for ETs that may destroy our planet or enslave us all?

I don't know why any aliens might want to destroy our planet, since it'll be a long time yet till we're likely to be any danger to anyone else, (unless of course they take the Bush approach to pre-emptive defence, and decide to invade just in case we might perhaps be a threat some day). But I think so far they're just seeing if they can pick up any hints that there might be someone out there, not trying to actually say hello to them yet.

is it worth taking the risk searching for ETs that may destroy our planet or enslave us all? Maybe it's the other way around. ETs won't reply to us for the same risk factor.

Knowing humans, we'd probably be the ones trying to do screwed up things to the aliens. Assuming we're more intelligent and technologically advanced. District 9 anyone?

Knowing humans, we'd probably be the ones trying to do screwed up things to the aliens. Assuming we're more intelligent and technologically advanced. District 9 anyone? Humans being more advanced than extraterrestrials that we make contact with is extremly unlikely in this time of our development, we cant even travel to the nearest stars yet so they would need to come here. And one hundred years or so is nothing astronomically so that alone would give us really bad odds. So it looks pretty impossible to me as it is now, for the technological part anyways, for the intelligent part, who knows...

I meant if we found and made it to them first. Well, it'd be a few hundred years before we were remotely likely to be able to do that, I'd have thought.
