Would religion survive alien contact ?

If we were to ever have direct contact with an intelligent alien race what would happen to our world's religions ?
It is a question that has often been asked in association with ideas of alien contact. Would beliefs be so shaken that some faiths might actually collapse in light of such an event ? Would learning about the religion of an advanced alien culture potentially bolster some belief systems ?
Could the world's religions survive the discovery of extraterrestrial life? Or would their beliefs be so shaken that they would eventually collapse? A survey discussed on Tuesday at a meeting on the search for alien life at the Royal Society in London suggests religion would survive.

lets be honest with ourselves... would losing religon be all that bad?. Some people couldn't live without a master to serve. They live on their knees and (try to) kill anyone who does think like them

If your religion is true, you have nothing to worry about. I can't think of ANY religion who denies the existance of any other beings in the universe. Nowhere in the Bible does it say, or even hint at, the idea that other life forms couldn't exist. Nearly all religions believe in various forms of angels. Whose to say those things they call "angels" are not what science sees as "aliens"? Of course religions would survive (though most probably hope it doesn't)! Some beliefs might change (though there is nothing in the Bible that would need to be changed), but I would bet no particular religion n... [More]

And men are from Mars LoL ! .This is a great Debate as Long as we all get our corners to Come Fighting from. Afterall Mankind is about the Most War like Killing creaturs ever,as Far as we know. And for Religions, well As long as we Have groups destroying there own women ,physicialy and in anyway that restricts there pesonal growth. And surpressing the truth We have come no futher than the primative days of our ancestors.and early Ape like behavour`s. I would Love someday For Mankind to Get up out... [More]

If these Aliens are hundreds of thousands of years more intelligent and advanced than us (and this is quite possible) then I'll guarantee you THEY'll be telling us if God exists or not.

I wonder if we are considered the laughing-stock of the universe to Aliens... Like literally making fun of us and cracking jokes about our existence... maybe even a little disgusted by our lifestyles (or lack of)... I don't see religion going anywhere even if Aliens do come down and communicate that God possibly does/doesn't exist (some may drop out). Plus, its one of the oldest and most successful businesses that has continually survived over time. Gotta stay in business somehow and keep the cash flow coming in which means more recruiting and meeting those "quotas" through "donations"...

I don't think science, in it's current form, would survive. The lies and the witholding of information, as well as secret testing and subliminal eugenetics, would doom them. The scientists have alot more to worry about than religionists. "Hospitals are shrines to the diseases they create"- from "Masked and Anonymous".

You can use the same arguements for any organized activity. Politics, farming, unions, mining, education, medicine, construction.... I think it is wrong to blame an institution, when the only good examples are based on individuals. I guess you could say each of those above has had a negative impact on some form of the world in some way. Politics - treats civilians like cattle Farming - hmm... the invention of pesticides? and the other have some obscure negative impact I suppose. I find nothing wrong with blaming the institution that approved of and supported the killing of any non-believers fo... [More]
