A new National Geographic documentary is revealing the secrets behind who made the Nasca Lines and why.
Its one of the most well known spectacles of the ancient world, but exactly who built this extensive series of lines making up giant patterns and shapes in Peru's southern desert and for what purpose ?
Etched, as if by giants, onto the arid moonscape of Peru’s southern desert lies one of man’s greatest mysteries; the Nasca Lines. More than 15,000 geometric and animal-like patterns have been discovered criss-crossing the pampas like a vast puzzle. Who built them and what was their purpose?

I thought it was little green men wot did it? Everyone knows that humans are not capable of drawings lines in dirt without the help of ET and mates. Have you noticed how small man syndrome is prevalent among dictators? Vote for peace, vote for tall people! How true it is in France

How in the world with the discovery of ONE (1)body and the lack of ONE (1) head, can any archeologist make an entire judgment of a culture as important as the Nasca Culture. Furthermore, how did those people manage to draw those lines only visible from the sky. Is the article missing something? Or is it me? I've had a theory about how and why the lines were drawn. I think a more reasonable explanation than flying saucers from outer space is that someone noticed that hot air rises and somwhere along the way invented hot air balloons. Some king probably sat in his hot air balloon and directed th... [More]

OverSword, Not that I am skeptical in nature of the world and all it's glorious mysteries, we as a civilization, are confronted with day in and day out, but it seems, and I realize you have already stated this in your comment, that, at least to our knowledge, it hasn't been written (or not yet discovered) within any discovered ancient texts, hot air balloons just weren't spoken or written of and to think a king...I would most definitely believe he would have had a written accord of his great invention. However, I must give you kudos...most individuals within today's society are motivated by fa... [More]

I've had a theory about how and why the lines were drawn. I think a more reasonable explanation than flying saucers from outer space is that someone noticed that hot air rises and somwhere along the way invented hot air balloons. Some king probably sat in his hot air balloon and directed the construction of the nasca lines for his own entertainment. I know there is not much in the way of evidence to support my theory but it maks just slightly more sense than the off world visitors needing landmarks. The hot air balloon theory could hold more than hot air (I had to write this one ) there is how... [More]

The Nazca lines, shapes, and formations are one thing. But the one place that is rarely talked about is Machu Picchu. What cracks me up is that the only difference in the unexplained between now and 500 years ago is that people aren't burned at the stake today. They might have their careers ruined, but...not executed. What's even more amazing is that some primal concepts still remain. Of those...the biggest one is that if something can't be explained....you simply dismiss it as if it's not even there. If humankind ever decides to donate more resources to figuring out our past...than they do pu... [More]

What secret is there other than "people are morons"? They thought some big guy in the sky was looking down and made pretty picture for him. If you can build pyramids, you can sure do that.

That article was short... and the story does not add up. bummer. Agreed, the article seems really pointless basically saying "Have you always wondered who etched the lines and why? Well..... us too" golly gee darn, really illuminating thanks. The alien theory may not be the most plausible but it certainly makes for more interesting reading. I guess my biggest question is why? Why would ET bother? For navigation? ET can travel from world to world in advanced spaceships but can't travel in south america without prehistoric stick figures? Maybe it was just for something to do, traveling the vastn... [More]

Well I'm grabbing a copy of the show as I type this - I'm interested in seeing the show in full as another theory is always intriguing.

Im sorry to tell you that most of those theories are wrong. I have my own theory and I have written a book about it: I have an unprecedented theory about natural resources management and hydraulics in the Andes, done by a pre-Inca culture 2500 years ago, called the Nasca Culture. Cabrejo has developed a theory on the use of the famous Nasca Lines. Follower of the work of Maria Reiche, he suggests that the lines represent some sort of complex giant hydraulic systems and structures that goes beyond religion and astronomy. I sustain a very workable solution to what the ancient pre-Inca Peruvian v... [More]
