A farmer who was electrocuted with 50,000 volts from a power cable was saved by his wellington boots.
He'd been ploughing a field when an overhead pylon fell down and landed on his tractor, the only thing that saved him from certain death were the rubber wellington boots he was wearing that prevented the current from being grounded.

i think the metal tractor around him had more to do with saving him than did his boots. its simply the path of least electrical resistance. the tractor tires probably exploded because the electricity had to go through them to reach the ground. I'm amazed that a cell phone would actually work in the middle of an electrified tractor though. lucky farmer.

The reporter surely didn't do his/her homework. First off, on a powerline, there are protection relays. In this case, the Phase Loss relay would have kicked out in 5-10 milliseconds after the line break, then if it would have failed to disconnect the line voltage, the underfrequency relay would have done it or the Ground Fault relay would have kicked OFF the main feed in a matter of milliseconds. The farmer might have seen the cable land on his tractor, and thanked Christ he was wearing rubber boots, but no way this line fell on the tractor live. Probably residual static, that I could buy, 50K... [More]
