A skeptic in India challenged Pandit Surender Sharma to kill him live on TV using his mystical powers.
Millions of people tuned in to watch the events unfold as Sharma attempted for hours to kill the head of the Indian Rationalists' Association however he was ultimately unsuccessful.
When a famous tantric guru boasted on television that he could kill another man using only his mystical powers, most viewers either gasped in awe or merely nodded unquestioningly. Sanal Edamaruku’s response was different. “Go on then — kill me,” he said.

Good job by the rational thinker. I am impressed with the strength of the belief from the guru. He was sure he could kill the skeptic. Nibs The guru is probably just sitting around now waiting for this guy to choke on his food or get hit by a bus and then he'll say "See, I killed him with my mind.... it just took a while"

Who knows, it might have worked if the victim believed in it. Very good point Slorri,we are all victims of our minds in some way or another.

Religion has it's uses, but it is faith, I believe, that holds power.

I would have loved to read the full article, but the link has expired since this was posted nearly 2 years ago. This is quite amusing. I am sure he is going to think twice now before making wild claims. The fool probably thought that no one would have enough guts to call his bluff. What kind of spiritually enlightened guru (I am assuming that he would claim to be spiritually enlightened since he is wearing the fancy clothes and claims to have mystical powers) would kill a person, let alone try and kill a person on tv, just to prove that they could do it? Doesn't sound very spiritual, or enligh... [More]

It is an old news story/thread, but seeing as you've expressed an interest in this I've done a Google search and have found it elsewhere, and as luck would have it it's quoting the original link in my OP as the source. http://www.rationalistinternational.net/article/2010/20100319/en_1.html

I do not believe he was a true guru. Everybody knows that each person has a will and even if he wills someone to die with magic, it won't work if the other person doesn't believe in it. It is the fear and the belief of both parties that makes it work. Plus there was the audience who probably were skeptical and didn't believe, which adds more energy AGAINST the magic... At any rate, I'm happy that it didn't work, that man has no business messing with magic if his priority is to kill people with it live on TV... He is not a true guru...

So what good is all of that "mystical power" if it only works on those who believe? Magic is best used when applied to the person using it. Otherwise it is just an influence or suggestion through the mind of the other person, and if the person doesn't even believe, it makes the magic even weaker and not work.
