Mystery surrounds discovery of giant 2,000-year-old Roman shoes

Archaeologists have been left perplexed by the sheer size of the shoes and why there are quite so many of them.
The anomalously large shoes, which are equivalent to a modern European size 49 or a US size 15, were discovered at the Magna Roman Fort in Northumberland, England by a team of archaeologists from the Vindolanda Charity Trust.

Dating back 2,000 years, the shoes were found in a ditch that was likely used as a rubbish dump.

Eight were found in total, making this one of the largest hauls of such shoes ever found in one place.
Senior archaeologist Rachel Frame noted that the find was "really unusual" and emphasized that the team was now trying to work out which regiments might have been stationed at the fort and why there was such a disproportionate number of large shoes compared to other locations.

The level of preservation evident in the shoes was also quite impressive.

"You need specific soil conditions with very low oxygen for organic objects made of things like wood, leather, textiles, stuff like that, to survive for this length of time," said Frame.

You can check out a video that looks at the discovery in more detail below.

When I was in the Marines they discharged a person that had size 18 feet and that was the reason they discharged him.

It's like they had large people back then... Being 6'5" with size US 22 shoes, I'd be considered a bit of an anomaly in this current age.

I consider the reason to be that the Roman Legion actively looked for recruits of a large stature to intimidate their enemies. Imagine facing some 7ft tall warrior on a battlefield. I'd give it a go but I'm only 5ft 4in so could chop at their knees lol

Tall, but not giants. I am 6'4 and also wear size 15 shoes.

Same here, not sure where the misconception that all people were small, back then. "Analysis of skeletal remains indicates that the average height for Roman men was around 5'6" (168 cm), with a range from 5' (152 cm) to 6'5" (195.4 cm). "

Well maybe there was a time we were more in tune and harmony with creatures deemed myth. Englad has a long history of wild Bigfoot like people.
