Jesus did not die on cross, says scholar

Scholar Gunnar Samuelsson has put forward the controversial claim that Jesus did not die on the cross.
He contended that there was no evidence that the Romans crucified people two thousand years ago and that the story was based on Christian traditions and artistic illustrations rather than on antique texts.
Jesus may not have died nailed to the cross because there is no evidence that the Romans crucified prisoners two thousand years ago, a scholar has claimed.

Most historians would disagree with you (even atheist historians). Some do take the stance that Jesus never existed, but most see enough evidence to at least suggest he was a real person. Sure, they argue about whether some of the things attributed to him actually happened, but as a whole, there is a consensus that there was a Jew from Nazareth who was a Teacher and on whom the stories of the Bible are at least somewhat based. Go back 100 or so years and you'll find that the majority of historians thought exactly the same about the historicity of William Tell.

Go back 100 or so years and you'll find that the majority of historians thought exactly the same about the historicity of William Tell. But that is not the point, the point is that many rituals and the "stories" that go with it are older than Christianism.

Several passages, in the NIV Bible anyway, say Jesus was nailed to a tree. EDIT - Oops I meant to quote one of the early responses to the OP, when there was a discussion going on about the word that is usually translated as "cross".

Ah, yes... the imaginary savior. ... enough said. Let's move on to a story with more basis in fact than fiction.

I recall reading something, that Jesus did survive the crusification and left for India, where he was believed to have spent 17 years learning Spirituality from the Brahmins ( Hindu Priests ) Just like Hindu texts state that a Man in white will arrive from the west a man who will be born from a virgin women. He will come to India to become Spiritual learn from Hinduism. And then he will return to the west as a messsenger for the people. Back to the topic it was said Jesus wanted his last days to be in India and the northern regions of Kashmir is where it is believed to be his last years on ear... [More]

Thank you for that.. so in the more modern term.. it can also mean a pole.... I think the other member was speaking of the ancient greek definition of Stravos...no matter what one I checked it only told me cross or stake.... but thanks for the source and info The argument would, in my humble opinion, appear to be moot considering that the ural reference was written several decades after the event and not within human memory. It is also my opinion that details of the crucifixion have never been dependable considering that none of the authors can even agree on Jesus' last words. In one account M... [More]

The argument would, in my humble opinion, appear to be moot considering that the ural reference was written several decades after the event and not within human memory. It is also my opinion that details of the crucifixion have never been dependable considering that none of the authors can even agree on Jesus' last words. In one account Mary and her group are near the cross and in another they are distant. Seth II of the Nag Hammadi Scrolls suggest that Jesus was not crucified at all, as does the Koran. To even imagine that a detail like a crucifixion happening on a pole or cross is indeed an ... [More]

The idea that some people have gone to such lengths to find the answer to the life and times of a story book entity is beyond me really. Whats the point in saying you have the answer to a specific question about said person, when all the 'proof' is book based, compiled from hearsay

The idea that some people have gone to such lengths to find the answer to the life and times of a story book entity is beyond me really. Whats the point in saying you have the answer to a specific question about said person, when all the 'proof' is book based, compiled from hearsay There is always that remote chance that it actually contains something else. So if you don't study it you will never know.

And yet, Dr. D, this thesis argument was approved for his dissertation and subsequently published! That does not surprise me in a time when universities offer courses in cyber feminism, the art of walking and philosophy and Star Trek.
