Alien hunters "should look for AI"

Astronomer Seth Shostak believes that we should be looking out for signs of an extraterrestrial artificial intelligence.
The Seti astronomer believes that the time between an alien civilization developing radio communications and artificial intelligence would be quite short and that we should be keeping an eye out for evidence of intelligent machines.
A senior astronomer has said that the hunt for alien life should take into account alien "sentient machines". Seti, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, has until now sought radio signals from worlds like Earth.

And of course in this discussion...it has to do with the definition of "life as we know it". Who's to say that silicon doesn't play a role in ET life? That would be a bit like the movie ]Blade Runner, they could seem sorta AI like to the rest of us.

How could a simple trip to Mars age your body 50 years?

If I was going to monitor an alien civilization using ai robots I would make insect machines. They are tiny, people normally do not bother them at all unless they are bugging them or in their home. I would use fly's and mosquitoes. Flys for visuals, mosquitoe's for taking or injecting samples. Now I am assuming I would have the tech to do this, I would also like them to be an Biological AI Robotic Insect with controls to take over if needed for something in particular. Biological in reproduction, so self replenishing, some how. If I am going to dream it up, might as well dream big.

Some people think that he was a high as a kite when he came up with all this, although I'd never underestimate the power of certain drugs to open up the "Doors or Perception" I see what you did there

How could a simple trip to Mars age your body 50 years? Maybe if you took the scenic route? You know, checking out all of the sights and stuff... ok, maybe not.

If you stopped the aging gene that would not prevent you from dying. I am pretty sure that it is thought that the more cell cycles a cell undergoes, the shorter the telomeres get. Which ensures cells have a finate life span, even following mitosis. (If a human cell is sick, dying, or unable to preform efficiantly then it is replaced by a new cell through mitosis) As telomeres get shorter we get older and eventually die. Telomere Mitosis I picked all that up at UM over time Hope I got it right...... Other wise I have learned nothing from Mattshark, Cetacea and Copa!

How could a simple trip to Mars age your body 50 years? I think he was referring to bone density. After a a year or 2 in space your bones would become quit brittle.
