Scientists have found further evidence for the existence of a new medium sized category of black hole.
Studying images taken via the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile researchers determined that the distance and brightness of HLX-1 some 300 million light years away are strong indicators that it contains an intermediate-size black hole.
If confirmed, HLX-1 would be classified as an intermediate-type black hole - something astrophysicists suspected to exist, but for which there have been only tentative detections in the past.
