NASA engineers believe they can launch a low-cost robotic Moon mission within 1000 days.
Costing less than $200 million NASA engineers believe they can design, build and launch a humanoid robot to the moon that would not only cost far less than a manned mission but would come with none of the risk associated with sending humans in to space.
NASA has unveiled plans to put a robot on the moon for a fraction of the cost of sending a human. Engineers claim that in just 1,000 days they can safely build and fire a humanoid-like machine into space and onto our nearest neighbour.

This seems to be a logical extension to the space program. For those that believe the humanoid robot is absurd then I suppose Data from Star Trek was absurd or anything that resembles any thing more than a box is just a waste of effort. Our design is efficient and we as humans understand what can be done with our body and what our limitations are. Perhaps the real focus of this should be will humans ever explore the universe or will we have to leave that to our robot pals.

it better be 1000 days. i will not accept 1001 days Was wondering about that myself. Since when did we start using days when talking of the future? What's up with "within 3yrs"?

None of which are to be discussed here, thank you. You just want to keep the blinders on the sheeple who don't realize that the moon is actually a hologram projected from the Pentagon... ------- On topic, I'd rather see government employees running to home depot to buy a bolt than having a contractor provide them for $700 apiece.

Why bother with a humanoid machine? Because it's great PR. They will be able to show it in school rooms, capturing the imagination of the kids and getting them entusiastic about the space program. That is invaluable to an organization like NASA.

I think you don't understand folks, president Obama wanted to imitate President Kennedy and specify some kind of goal for humankind. But given its budget, instead of the more logic and ambitious "We will have a base moon before 5 years" it is "we will put some humanoid robot before 3 year, and he will be fouling around until nobody care"... I already don't care president obama....

Why bother with a humanoid machine? Because it can do tasks and use tools that where designed for humans, ie on the space station, ultimately making things cheaper. Here is more detailed info on the Project: http://robonaut.jsc.nasa.gov/default.asp

in a thousand days? couldn't they just say in about three years? it's not like they're going to suddenly unveil the rocket on the thousandth day... humans confuse me.
