Archaeologists have uncovered an ancient axehead in Australia dating back 35,000 years.
The find proves that the Jawoyn people would have been the first to grind axes in order to sharpen the edges and helps to fill in one more piece of the puzzle of how modern humans developed tools.
A piece of stone axe found in the Northern Territory has been dated at 35,500 years old, making it the oldest of its type in the world.

The oldest in Australia, right? Because I had thought I read that axes were being used as long as 1 million years ago. Maybe they are refering to the particular edge grinding technique?

I think it was a widely held beleif that Aboriginal people arrived there about 20,000 years ago. But that number is obviuosly changing.
