Raptor and Scowl, may I congratulate you both on a masterful and respectful debate. Were I to declare a winner (in my opinion only, of course), the trophy would undoubtedly go to Raptor. But Scowl, you've made very solid arguments and held your own in several points. Regardless of the outcome, I'd like to thank you both for this extremely informative and educational discussion. If we discover life on another planet, I'll have to adjust my argument somewhat.

The chances of other life existing in an intelligent form somewhere in the universe is quite high so this is very bad news :/

The chances of other life existing in an intelligent form somewhere in the universe is quite high so this is very bad news :/ But with a very incomplete understanding of why life evolved on Earth and almost no knowledge of any planets outside our solar system, people are learning that there is no way to calculate these chances. So this is very good news.
