Japanese Venus probe fails to enter orbit

Japan's Akatsuki probe has failed to enter orbit around Venus and will have to wait 6 years to try again.
JAXA have set up a committee to try and work out what went wrong. It is the second time a probe sent by Japan to another planet has failed when attempting to enter orbit around it, their Mars probe Nozomi suffered a faulty valve after launching in 1998 and failed twice to enter orbit.
It was meant to be a new dawn for Japanese planetary missions, but the disappointing reports from the country's Venus probe Akatsuki are all too familiar.

They put the brakes on too late.

For anyone interested in the Akatsuki probe, the full story from launch through to the failure to enter orbit can be found HERE in the Exploration of Venus thread, along with the latest findings from Europe's Venus Express orbiter. Thanks for that! It's definitely unfortunate for something like this to happen when so much effort has been put forth.

Ooooh... Kinda dropped the ball on that one huh Japan... Before pointing the finger at Japan people really should look at the record of other nations. The Russians and the USA have had their fair share of mishaps too.

Before pointing the finger at Japan people really should look at the record of other nations. The Russians and the USA have had their fair share of mishaps too. Exactly, The russians lost their mars orbiter and the US has also lost spacecraft at Mars, UK lost it Beagle and the list just goes on and on, On another note we need to respect that Russia has had several sucsessful missions to venus when the landed the verneras on its surface and sent back some amazing pics, I agree Waspie, We can not single out any country for errors in the programs because each nation capable of such missions have ...
