New research in to hyena behaviour has revealed how they join their 'friends' for group activities.
In a land as hostile as Africa you need friends to survive, research conducted on hyenas in Kenya has shown that the animals carry out greeting ceremonies with one another to reinforce social bonds before embarking on a group task.
Research has revealed how the very sociable spotted hyena engages its "friends" in group activities. Female hyenas carry out greeting ceremonies - standing side by side and sniffing each other - before embarking on a group task. This appears to reinforce social bonds before a potentially risky activity, such as a hunting trip or an attack on an enemy predator.

I always thought they were a little dog and a little cat, not domestic of course... It's interesting that they have a ritual so similar to dogs.
