Dr Craig Venter believes he may have stumbled across an entirely new category of life form.
There are currently three known branches or "domains" of life; humans, plants and animals are one while bacteria and archaea make up the other two. Now however DNA collected from a round the world yachting trip has yielded genes that do not seem to fit in to any of these categories suggesting that it could belong to a fourth undiscovered branch of the tree of life.
He found that some of the genes did not fit into the three domains and that he could possibly have stumbled on a whole new domain. Trying to classify the new DNA has proved impossible and so Prof Eisen has published his findings in the journal Public Library of Science in the hope others can help.
